For this reason i wish that shows that got big/awesome reviews/etc. would be *taped*. We can't all afford to travel to NY or London and i would love to see Lion King or Cats or a dozen other shows that will just never come anywhere near me.

*le sigh*

The problem with that is that they could stand to then lose out on money from peopel that would have gone to see it but decided to just buy the dvd instead. Where do you live? We get the touring show of Lion King, Wicked and others through Dallas every few summers.

See, that's just *such* crap. Greed! If they held off on doing a DVD release for a year or something, they'd make *more* money.

I'm in the middle of Missouri, and the only places i can think that might actually host a Broadway show are three, five, or eight hours away. (St. Louis, Kansas City, Chicago). And it seems that shows in St. Louis tend to be at times when getting away is difficult, and ticket prices are a lot on top of gas, food, and a hotel room.

Just not feasible for us or a lot of people.

Uhm its not greed. It's called keeping actors, stage hands, and a whole lot of other people in jobs. Because the money from a DVD? Will not be going to all those people that used to have jobs.

I'm sorry its not fessable but I hate to say it that you don't have a right to see musicals. It sucks but that's sorta how it goes.

That said there ARE tons of places to get bootlegs. Youtube often has cams of shows. And there are shows that do put out DVDs - hit up amazon - some might be out of print or might not be with the particular actor/actress you want there's usually still pretty good.

And trust me when I say you don't want to see the Lion King musical on DVD. There are musicals which be recorded and not loose anything, but Lion King is not one of them. The performers come down into the audience and the overall experience I can't see translating well into recorded medium.

Check around, there are often groups that do trips to do musicals and offer discount ticket prices since they've gotten a group rate. Local colleges and small theaters can put on good productions as well. The best show of Music Man I've seen was a dinner theater.

How is the money from bootlegs going to the actors, stage hands, etc.? People are still going to see live performances. Especially if, as [personal profile] tabaqui mentioned, the DVDs are released after a good run or something.

I personally would rather see the Lion King musical on DVD than not at all.

I was trying at the very least to offer them options if they ARE desperate to see a show and have no possible way of getting there.

The problems with DVDs is not only that less people will go to see it live (I believe a show has been killed that way), its also the fact that it can very complicated to get all the rights and permissions, PLUS some shows just will not translate onto DVD.

Would I like a copy of Spamalot, Wicked, or Lord of the Rings the Musical on DVD? Fuck, yes. But there are reasons they don't offer them and its not ~greed~.

Uh, no. Remember Daniel Radcliffe in 'Equus'? That play's run ended, what, three years ago? Something like that? Exactly who is being kept out of making a living if a recording of that play were to be sold today?

Nobody.

And wth, dude - i should go see a play live to help keep stage hands, etc., in a paycheck but i should go watch a bootleg? That makes *no* sense.

Considering i'll probably never get to see 'Lion King' either way, i'll take the DVD. And yes, the local high school and theatre group and college two hours away put on plays, and i've seen some, but really - how is a production like that remotely like a Broadway show? Which is what i'm talking about?

Sorry, your arguments are not convincing me. And there is no dinner theatre around here without invoking the same damn issues - time, distance and money that i can ill afford.

I was trying to give you options if you were so desperate to see a damn broadway show. Which is WHY I pointed out the bootleg and youtube routes, because yeah it does such not be able to see shows. And dude there ARE still productions of Equus going on.

I'm not sure why you think your entitled to seeing this stuff. You aren't. It sucks, but life does that some times. You don't have the right to see musicals cheaply. Seriously, I know in fandom we're used to getting everything on download or cheap off amazon or streaming from netflicks, but either you can watch shit on youtube or download bootlegs or you can drive several hours and spend money and know that your supporting the arts.

Like I said I'd love a dvd of Spamalot or Wicked or several others, if at some point it happens I'll be over the moon. But if it doesn't it's most likely not because someone is being greedy or mean.

Sorry for not wanting to see live shows die out.

Oh, please, get off your high horse. Having a DVD of a play - particularly with a particular cast or actor in it - released for sale to the general public once that version is done - will *not* make live shows die out.

Get a grip.

And please quit with your 'you're so entitled' business. Wishing I could see Mr. Radcliffe do 'Equus' is not 'fangirl entitlement', it's a fan of the actor wishing she could have seen what was probably an amazing performance, and one that *is not* currently running, nor probably ever will again.

Do you see the difference here? I can go see 'Equus' or any other play at any time, but it's the particular cast and/or actor in a particular run that really intrigues me, and in the case of some shows - the incredible sets and costumes that dinner theatre or my local high school will never be able to pull off.

I honestly think that is BS, I would not have been exposed to "Sweeney" Todd without Angela Lansbury/George Hern DVD or Into the Woods without the DVD of the OBC. I have since sought out other recordings for both shows, have seen the most recent national tour of "Sweeney Todd" and wish there was a National Tour of "Into the Woods" so I could see it live.

I think it would possibly increase attendance because recordings help build an audience and can create fans of a show without having seen it live.

Also I think it would be good in general, because there will be people who will sadly never be able to see a Broadway show or national tour: due to time constraints, financial constraints, not being lucky enough to live near a tour city, and all of the above. This could give many who would never see the show the chance to see it, even if it is not the same, it can still be pretty damn awesome.
