I'm not sure I get it. Are you saying you never really were a "tomboy" (goddammit do I hate that word) but you pretended to be because you were conditioned to think "girly" things were bad?

I admit that I am confused to. I know traditional "girly" things like makeup and jewelry hold appeal for many females, but not for me. I know that people wish to express themselves in a multitude of ways and that they should not be judged for that. But what if I am a woman who doesn't have that traditional girly side. I hope I am not adding fuel to the fire and maybe I am reading the secret wrong, but what's wrong with being a tomboy? Does everyone has to express their femininity through jewelry and make up? Especially if you don't have a problem with people that do?

OP, if you are happy the way you are now, that's great. I'm just leery of taking some over marketed version of the young woman ideal so seriously.

I think it's more that the OP liked those things all along but was afraid to admit as much because 'traditionally girly' things are considered inferior and she didn't want to be seen as shallow (a common stereotype of girls and women who dress a certain way or like certain things). It's not that there's anything wrong with being a tomboy, but there is something unhealthy about denying yourself something you like (dolls, make-up, the colour pink...) because people may assume you're a vacuous girly girl.

This helps a bit. Thanks. My mom thinks I am uninterested because I don't like wearing makeup. I guess I am just more experienced with the other side of the stereotype spectrum.

What's wrong with tomboy?

I could be wrong, but maybe the poster thinks that tomboy is just another useless label like labels tend to be and felt uncomfortable using such a label.

I've got no problem with labels in general. When they're reasonably accurate, they're useful tools that help us communicate as a society. But I have a problem with tomboy, because it perpetuates the idea that liking/doing certain things just aren't things that girls do. The things I like to wear, watch and do, do not determine my sex or gender.

My problem with tomboy is that my penchant for pants, short hair, football and war movies don't make me any less of a girl/woman. And I think tossing "tomboy" out there only adds fuel to the fire of "this is how you be a girl...if you're not like this, you're this weird hybrid thing."

OP

Exactly.
I was always afraid to dress "girly" because I saw how "girly" girls got treated and talked about behind their backs.

Also, if you look up-thread, there are nice examples about people assuming certain loks aren't okay for women because they make them look like "skanks.

The way I dress says nothing about my character or my sexuality.
Yes, it is odd, but it took a fashion doll franchise to finally make me overcome that fear of getting judged as "a loose woman"/"a weak girl". People will judge away, no matter what I wear. So I might as well put on my mini skirts or pink tops BECAUSE I LOVE MY MINI SKIRTS AND PINK TOPS :)

Good for you, OP! I don't go for mini skirts but I love pink and pretty sparkly things. You should wear what you like. If people are going to hate, they'll find a reason to hate anyway.
