Good for you Anon!

I'm still not jumping to wear jewelry or dresses (They just seem ill fitted to a lot of activity), but MH helped me as well to not look down on feminine things anymore.

(I bought two dolls this month :x)

You know, I don't like Bratz but if those dolls could help you with something like this then I'm happy they exist.

I had to go through something similar too so I know what a relief to finally come to terms with yourself is. Good for you, OP.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-24 10:58 pm (UTC)(link)
They aren't Bratz though lol, they're Monster High dolls.

Bratz and Monster girl dolls made you embrace your feminine side? I'm sorry, I'm all for being feminine and girly, but those dolls are made of skank and anorexia.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-24 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
Thank goodness. I was starting to think I was the only one that felt this way.

Good for you, OP! "Girls can do anything" should apply to stereotypical girl things too. :)

I love that the Monster High characters are girly without being cookie cutter, and I think the dolls are some of the most thoughtfully designed I've seen in years. (Also, shipping Frankie/Abbey is a good life choice and you should feel good.)

That's cool, OP! I think Sailor Moon and shoujo anime in general helped me get over my femme-phobia. I don't dress femme most of the time (sometimes I do), but it did help me to stop viewing femininity and feminine people in a negative light, which is important. However, I have a lot of latent guilt over the way I treated my youngest sister and other feminine girls I knew growing up :(

I wish Monster High was a real 30 minute episode cartoon; it is just that adorable and I love the idea of monsters just living their lives and trying to fit into society. Although, I didn't personally care for the fashionista thing it has going on when I first started watching it. (This is the nerd in me talking: I mean, I know Mattel is selling these dolls to little girls, but I still think some of these monsters should look scarier/less humaniod, no matter how fashionably they dress!) But now the character designs have grown on me. I'm glad the show helps you feel more comfortable in your own skin. Or lack of, if you are that type of monster. :)

(Ha ha, Frankie and Abbey are both fun characters; I don't even collect dolls but nevertheless they are both on my dresser right now. I will probably buy Heath, too, if they ever get around to making a doll for him.)

It takes all kinds of things to make all kinds of people feel comfortable with themselves.

To be honest, I was at first slightly disgruntled at your secret. Why? To me, the dolls don't really project a healthy image of being feminine. But then I was like, you know what, fuck it. It's not like OP is out there wearing purple lipstick, tube tops, and miniskirts.

So now I'm like, hey slow your roll, self. OP feels comfortable! What's to judge? Fucking nothing.

Yeah it took me a while until I let myself enjoy girly things too. I didn't want to be grouped in with the shallow girly girl stereotypes when I was younger.

It probably wasn't until I discovered feminism that I was really able to see that it was the people who believed in the stereotypes that were wrong, not the girls who enjoyed pink and dolls and makeup. Like even when I was in that tomboy persona my head was so messed up by sexist messages from society.

That's great, OP! I have always loved feminine stuff, mostly wearing pink when I was younger, and was bullied because of it. The funny (or sad, depending on your viewpoint) is that the same girls who teased me started wearing pink themselves when it suddenly got popular.

For me it was hanging around women as an adult who totally rocked the femme look and didn't take shit from other people about it. (Granted, more in a gothy style but hey.) Growing up, I didn't have a whole lot of friends (basically dad isolated us) and my dad was super judgemental of anything feminine. He outright told me at various points he wished I was a boy and punished anything feminine and rewarded anything masculine I did, so it wasn't till I was an adult that I actually started to be comfortable with the things I liked that were girly.

I think the Monster High dolls are adorable and I'm glad they've helped you to be comfortable with who you are and the things you like. :)
