Why wasn't Bones unbearable from the beginning? It was all but telegraphed by the script and both protagonists in the pilot that this was going to be a "will they/won't they" show. I loathed the thing by the close of the first season just for that reason, and stopped watching. It was like being spoonfed all the supposed 'tension'.

Guess I still have feelings about it.

But SVU? IDGAF, they're in love dammit!

Because will they/won't they can be effective and enjoyable when it's done with a deft hand and isn't the main subplot between the leads. And in the early days of the show (and of most male/female crime shows, from Moonlighting and Remington Steele on, not just Bones), as the characters are still developing the writers are coming up with new things and new situations. Then when things fall into a rut of things to explore after a while they feel they can only develop the interpersonal dynamic and besides fans loooove UST, right? So Lead Man gets a new girlfriend, Lead Lady has a Jealous Revelation, Lead Man's favorite qualities of the disposable girlfriend are those shared by Lead Lady, pass the antacids, eeeeurgh.

I would list SVU as an exception, as Dick Wolf managed to make a really awesome man/woman friendship there, but as you ship it... I dunno, I find that kinda incestuous. They're close but not couple close. D:

Bones was unbearable after they fucked up Zack's character so badly. That was fucking insulting and I stopped watching then. So I don't know what the Bones/Booth pair is actually like. Glad Angela/Hodgins happened though. They were always my favorite characters.

And that's why I bailed on Bones. It wasn't deft or a subplot. Nearly every single episode seemed to telegraph the...impending couplehood...of B/B. You're right, when it's done right, it's like a beautiful dance that you get to be privy to - X-Files and SVU (imo) did it exactly right. It was never the point of either show, so the relationships grew organically from the episodes, the plotlines, the arcs and the myths of the show. That's my favorite kind of "will they/won't they", when they are NOT the point of the show, but shine anyway.

But I'm probably in the minority as B/B has fans coming out of the woodwork to foam over every single "twist". So, you know.

Bones was unbearable after they fucked up Zack's character so badly.

Yeah, that too. And the way they tried to act as though all the 'clues' were there? No. If the shipping angle hadn't driven me away, that would have been the last nail in the coffin of my patience.

I watched Bones for 5 years and stopped shipping Booth/Brennan after season 1. It was just too forced for me and I also thought Booth was a dick so...but I stuck around until Hodgins and Angela got married because I adored them.
