I hope they keep it platonic- it seems that that's what they intend to do, at any rate. So hopefully it will stay that way unless executive meddling happens.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-25 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Writers confirmed there are no plans to have them become a couple. Several times.
*cough ships it anyway cough* But yeah there is no will they/won't the component to the series as it is.

I keep hearing it's supposed to be platonic. Not sure if that'll last or if that just means there'll only be tons of UST.

Mostly I'm wary of JLM's "Eli Stone" face. If he makes those faces I don't know if I can watch this show.

I give it four episodes before there's obvious UST or someone thinking they're a couple.

And should it last that long, four seasons before they pair up.

I think one of the higher-ups and/or the actors said that a romantic relationship between the two was never going to happen. Granted, the writers could always change their minds but I'm going to give them the benefit of the doubt because omfg Lucy Liu is fierce.

Give the execs time to make the fatal mistake: they did it with Moonlighting, for God's sake, and every duo afterward. Bones sucks now as a direct result of killing the sexual tension. There's no need to watch shows like that without the banter and flirting.

Still missing the original Mr Steed and Mrs. Peel.....

The powers that be say...

Robert Doherty: In fact, let me be blunt - I don't want them to end up in bed together. That's just not what the show is for. I don't think that would be true to the spirit of the original relationship between the two characters, and that's important to me. I'd like to show that a man and a woman can be friends and go to work and live together and not end up romantically entangled.
Carl Beverly: Robert often calls it a bromance, but one of the bros just happens to be a woman. I think it's a really apt description because there's this idea that a man and woman can't be together - on a show, especially - without needing to be together sexually or in love or whatever. And this is really just about the evolution of a friendship and how that happens.

This is very off-topic, but what else has the guy in the bottom-left picture done, TV or movie wise? I know I've seen him somewhere, but for the life of me I can't remember where.

You know, thinking about it, it might also be that the writers throw in the romance at the end when they're out of ideas, as a last-ditch effort to perk things up. So it's not the eventual romance that kills the show, so much as the romance is a sign that the show is out of gas. Hence, a get-together done right might not ruin a show.

I actually stopped watching both those shows before the main characters got together so the examples don't really fit for me (aka I think they got crappy long before then)

I'm trying to think of an example of a show I stopped shortly after the couple got together but I can't actually think of any right off....there has to be something.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 12:04 am (UTC)(link)
Nah. The problem with those two ships isn't that they got together. The problem with those two ships is that when the producers ran out of stories to tell, they kept people watching by jerking around the shippers. Also, none of the producers seem to be able to imagine a romantic relationship between two people who have respect and friendship between them.

I particularly enjoy the daily EW interviews where the showrunners talk about how relationships are boring and soulkillling and no fun. I'll bet their partners do too.

i need the adventures of shirley holmes on dvd so bad. every time i see promos for this show i'm taken aback by deep nostalgia for a sec.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 12:16 am (UTC)(link)
Why wasn't Bones unbearable from the beginning? It was all but telegraphed by the script and both protagonists in the pilot that this was going to be a "will they/won't they" show. I loathed the thing by the close of the first season just for that reason, and stopped watching. It was like being spoonfed all the supposed 'tension'.

Guess I still have feelings about it.

But SVU? IDGAF, they're in love dammit!

[personal profile] truxillogical 2012-09-26 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Uugh. One of the things I actually liked a lot about SVU was that Olivia and El were close (close enough that other characters constantly made assumptions), but never romantic. I wish it happened more. And especially, I wish that it would stop being treated as "inevitable." Y'know: "Oops, this guy/girl has stumbled into this girl/guy's life! They're gonna fight and fall in love because they have CHEMISTRY!" There are different kinds of chemistry and different kinds of closeness, and I honestly think that seeing it constantly up there as romantic has a negative impact on people who do have a close friendship with someone of the opposite gender. (Ask me how often I have to endure: "So, when are you and *best friend* gonna date/tie the knot?" From my own family half the time, too. Oh, those "adorable" knowing looks...)

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
I want them to be platonic on the show, but I want them paired in fanfic. Pegging, D/s IDGAF honestly.

The writers have said it's going to be platonic, but I have to admit I'm a little wary (I've been lied to before!). Even if I ship it, I don't want another show where the will they/won't they drowns out the plot.

[personal profile] velvet_mace 2012-09-26 01:40 am (UTC)(link)
Bones, at least, was never particularly platonic. They pretty much hit the UST button on the first episode and kept it pressed until they ran out of reasons to keep them apart.

House -- Cuddy was going through a midlife crisis. She got over it.
caffeine_buzz: (popcorn)

[personal profile] caffeine_buzz 2012-09-26 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
I'm hoping they keep it platonic, but I can also see it happening that fans will ship it (which is no problem by itself, ship and let ship and all that), some of whom will be very vocal, and eventually the executives give in and stick them together because "it's what the fans want!" and then it all goes bad.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-26 02:04 am (UTC)(link)
...That House/Caddy image actually creeps me out a little. What happened in the years I stopped watching?

IAWTC. Bones was never that great to start with thanks to sloppy characterization, but once Bones and Booth went from platonic to romantic, the amount of suck increased exponentially.

No, I totally agree. I like it so far & I'll watch for a while, but I might stop if they hook up. And not at all because of Sherlock, but just because I am sick to death of writers getting lazy and just saying "oh, let's have them bang and then break up a hundred times for ~drama." There are other kinds of relationships! It'd be nice to see a male/female friendship not based in sex.
