Well, it's certainly not a jumping spider.

But I think if its smaller than a quarter, it's probably harmless. You might wanna take it out though, just in case. Do you have some kind of cup to scoop the spider and a piece of paper to cover the lid?

Oh, it's very dead. I know F!S kind of loves spiders, but when they're fast moving as this guy was...I just panic and start smashing (I had already hit this one with a shoe, and thought I had just done a particularly nice up-and-down to keep it so intact..but then after taking photos -- only one of which saved to my stupid-ass phone -- it started walking around again and I freaked the fuck out.)

Also, the idea of jumping spiders are right up there with air-breathing, land-walking sharks on the things that terrify the hell out of me. And I don't think ABLW sharks are real, so....

But thanks for the reassurance! :)

Eh, where I live (Malaysia) jumping spiders are up there with geckos and lizards and snakes as "critters-that-live-in-the-neighborhood". It's one thing to see tropical creatures in the zoo. It's another when those same creatures live beside you (literally spinning webs beside you) and co-habit your house (lizards, geckos, and snakes on the ceiling are basically a sign of a house turned into a home) or your school (giant moths the size of your hand flying in classrooms are a normal sight after moonsoon season). The only reason why I'm so calm about it is that I've been living with these things my whole life.

But yeah, if you're not used to it, you'll gonna be freaked out. At least you managed to face your get a bit. You did smash tht slider yourself. :)

Wow, snakes on the ceiling is normal? I live in the tropics too (northern Australia) and haven't seen this! They have hung around outside occasionally though, which freaks me out because, so many poisonous ones, and I have pets. I have plenty of other critters inside though, and the occasional frog and bird wanders in, and I had a big green frog living in the loo for a while.

*sigh* I would love to see giant moths inside. Are they hawk moths? I saw quite a few when I was in Malaysia.

Well, not on the ceiling per se, but they do make appearances in the kitchen, living room and garden. My mother tried to use sulphur to ward the snakes off - I have no idea how - but she gave up a few months later (note, I live in an upper class neighborhood). My grandmother's house has a snake wedged between the floorboards for two days before everyone found out! If it's small size or green, we usually leave them alone. If it's black or diamond-head, we call the fire department. Also, if you hear noises coming from the ceiling at night, you're not dreaming. My mother says it's rats, but judging from the noises I heard, I don't think it's a rat.

Ooh! we have toads living in our fishpond in the front garden! We even have a small colony at the local prayer centre that lives by burrowing under the trees!

As for the moths, they're Atlas Moths :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atlas_moth . They usually come after the monsoon season when everything is growing. I usually spot them fluttering and resting all over the school and one of them even rested on my hand!

I hope you'll be lucky and see one soon! :D

(note; our school, despite being four stories tall and made out of concrete is pretty much open to the elements. Walled corridors? What are walled corridors?)

I have noises in the ceiling too! They sound pretty big for rats I have to say, but I have seen some pretty big rats. I put the cat in the ceiling every now and again, and that seems to keep them quiet. And the geckos seem to keep the bugs down in the house.

Introduced cane toads occasionally make their way into the house, which is not good, because they're poisonous and they like the pets' water bowls (which poisons them). Luckily fairly rare.

IDK schools here seem pretty open to the elements too, compared to temperate climes. Perhaps the theory is that the air flow makes things cooler, except that doesn't work so well in the monsoon.

Oh my *flails* I LOVE Atlas moths. They aren't in Australia, sadly. (We do have giant stick insects though.) Here is a picture of an Atlas moth on my hand (I met it at a butterfly farm in Indonesia):

Omg I can handle all the spider pictures upthread but that atlas moth made me hyperventilate for half a minute or so. D:

*deep breaths* *adblock* Yes that is a gorgeous moth and I wish I could appreciate it! D:
