No offense but...why would you ever take someone else's word on if a performance is good or not? Having your own opinions on these things is completely fine (good even!); your opinion doesn't have to match up with the general consensus to be valid.

Thank you. I was wondering this as well. I can understand it having a little influence, but following blindly when you clearly disagree makes me really confused.

This.

And also why would you think the internet would have one consistent opinion on things when it's made up of all sorts of different people? This secret makes no sense to me.

Haha, that's very true. The internet is consistent on NOTHING.

I'm obligated to disagree with you.

Not the op but I've felt the same way in the past about certain subjects...

Sometimes it's just that the person posting their opinions seems to know what they're talking about - because they know all the right words / they use all the jargon for the subject and sometimes it's easy to forget it's still just their opinion and not actual fact - no matter how "knowledgeable" they seem to be on subjects like acting or literature or whatever it is.

Hm...well, I'd just try to remember that it's okay to form your own opinions, and try to come to terms with the fact that not everyone else will agree with them. Even if they aren't popular ones, that's shouldn't matter; you don't have to accept someone else's word as law regarding subjective material. And I understand some people are extremely well spoken and have loads of charisma, so if your own opinions aren't that strong then you might be easily swayed by their 'knowledge'.

I'd also hazard that maybe it has to do with the kind of insults that come along with these seemingly-factual statements about acting quality.

"X can't act, and if you can't tell that, you must be blind!"

"Y is so terrible, the only reason anyone could stand them is because they're hot!"

"Z's performance was so terrible, any real fan should be mortified!"

There's a strong current of not only "my opinion is right" but also "if you disagree, then you're stupid/ignorant/don't know what you're talking about."

Let me give an example. My sister and I watch Phantom Menace. She says the kid playing Anakin was terrible. I think he had some bad lines, like everyone else in the movie. We watch SyFy Original Trainwreck #63725. My friends skewer the acting. I'm complaining about the inconsistent pseudoscience. Hell, sometimes Crow and Servo are critiquing the acting and it's not registering as other-than-average to me.

I also can't read body language very well at all and subtle nonverbal social cues go over my head.

Oh dear, the person who played Anakin was shockingly bad. But so was Natalie Portman and Ewan McGregor. You have to wonder about the directing in that film.

Sometimes it's the script they are given and the direction, not just the acting skills. Still I'm never impressed by Ewan McGregor, but he is definitely variable, and Natalie Portman can act.

If you turn the sound down for a minute and watch you can see who the really bad actors on the screen are, that does help.
