God I know right.
Whenever fanbrats start up about supposed acting quality I just tune out...

Good for you. You have learned the most important of subjective truths: nobody knows what the hell they are talking about in terms of who gave a good performance. Unless it's you.

MST3K :: flail ::

Yes. I agree. I don't listen to the interwebz murmuring about actors.

Also. I miss MST3K. RiffTraxx just isn't the same :P

Huh. I think I see your problem.

The internet is not some grand sentience. It's a platform for people to share their opinions. One that's prone to hyperbole because of a lack of accountability and the fact that it's difficult to draw attention due to the amount of content out there.

I'm glad you cottoned on and I hope this realization affects everything you read on the internet. Not just opinions on acting.

This is true for even professional sources critiquing a work. Because most of the time? Critique is the critiquer's opinion. The fact that it took you so long to find out is kind of sad. I'm sorry?

Agreed. There are a handful of big-deal stars who I don't think are particularly talented, but I don't like to broadcast that opinion.

And truly, once you've seen Manos: The Hands of Fate, EVERYONE seems Oscar-worthy by comparison.

(Except Tommy Wiseau.)

B-b-but Torgo! I love Torgo. The dog was a pretty good actor too.

I'm trying to think of what MST3k movie had the best acting. 'Werewolf' with Richard Lynch and Joe Estevez? 'Soultaker' with Joe Estevez and Robert Z'Dar and that chick who was also in 'Future Shock' (<-great bad movie, btw)? Joe Don Baker in 'Michell' and 'Final Justice'? I admit, I have soft spot for ROWSDOWER and his Canadian-ness. What about Raul Julia playing duel roles in 'Overdrawn at the Memory Bank'?

No offense but...why would you ever take someone else's word on if a performance is good or not? Having your own opinions on these things is completely fine (good even!); your opinion doesn't have to match up with the general consensus to be valid.

Thank you. I was wondering this as well. I can understand it having a little influence, but following blindly when you clearly disagree makes me really confused.

[personal profile] unicornherds 2012-09-26 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
This.

And also why would you think the internet would have one consistent opinion on things when it's made up of all sorts of different people? This secret makes no sense to me.

People are being too stupid(probably not the right word but couldn't find anything else at the moment) about this subject. Everyone is overrated, one noted actor/actresses etc except their favourite underrated actors/actresses

Why did you listen to other people's opinions about a subjective truth to begin with? regardless of where you heard it?

You kinda remind me of myself when I was way young, watching movies based on how good they are online. Then I watched some other movies that got low reviews and find them entertaining, and there goes my approval of internet movie critics.

Sorry it took you this long to found out what you like and don't like. Here's hoping you can make your own choices towards actors from now on!

Yeah, I remember when I came to that conclusion. It's a very freeing revelation, but also leads to much frustration when you realize the majority of fandom goers only care about acknowledging subjectivity when it's people ragging on something they like.
citrinesunset: (Default)

[personal profile] citrinesunset 2012-09-27 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
I think sometimes people are too quick to make strong, broad judgments that aren't very defendable or nuanced. "X is a horrible actor!" instead of "X was miscast and doesn't have the skills necessary to pull off this type of character," for example. Generally, I'm going to be more quick to take the latter opinion seriously.

But honestly, almost all criticism is subjective to a degree. Even professional critics do not agree on stuff like this. That's okay. This isn't something where there needs to be one, definitive answer. Consider what critics say, but don't feel like you have to agree with them or adopt their opinions.

You've learned a valuable lesson.

Truth is all of us out here in internet land are just people like you. Full of opinions and preferences and occasionally feet in our mouths, but rather light on omniscience. There's no escaping that you have to weigh everything we say against your own experience, philosophy, and logic, rather than just taking for granted that some randomly loud person on the internet is more insightful than you are.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 01:53 am (UTC)(link)
Congratulations. You've just learnt what "subjectivity" is.

Better late than never, right?

Who would've thought that internet users' opinions would differ.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think there are some objectively bad actors, however your own likes can mean you overlook it. Now I know that Keanu Reeves really can't act. It's obvious, but I love the Matrix. I can imagine some people try and argue that he is a good actor based on their love for that. He's not, he moves well but he can't speak and he's like wood.

Dr Who features some epic bad acting, Amy Pond isn't great, and you can see it just by noticing how good Alex Kingston is in comparison (River) or even Rory. The worst acting ever on that show was Martha, like Keanu couldn't speak, her rhythms were all wrong, it was cringeworthy. However again there will be hundreds of fans of Amy and Martha who would get angry and see it as bashing the actress.

Fact is, people get work based on their looks, doesn't mean they can act. Fans may like/fancy them, so will overlook everything and get defensive if people point out the bad acting.

Yeah, took me a while to catch on to that, too.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 03:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, me too.

I just assumed people knew more about acting than I did for a long time, but actually, I think most of what people say about acting ability is bullshit.
