Getting hurt

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
I need your input, F!S. How serious is a serious injury? Speaking as someone who has never been able to seek medical attention, my point of reference is severely dysfunctional.

Is a concussion a serious injury? What about broken fingers? A fall that results in bone bruising? Minor shin fractures?

I guess in general I'd like to know now so that I ca get help in the future, if these things happen again.

I would consider a concussion a sorta serious injury. When I had one I had issues with nausea, double vision and extreme headaches on a daily basis for 3 months, which made it really hard to function.

Medical attention didn't do much for me, though. All they could tell me was "Yep, looks like a minor concussion. Here's some pain killers."

Broken fingers are iffy. If you have the medical resources yes but it's not like an Emergency Room or Hospital visit imo. Broken other things, yes. Concussion depends on severity I guess? I'm no help because I probably have the same ideas as you because of lack of ability to get to medical attention.

Ehh, depends on the context, but all of those would have me seeking medical attention, although maybe not desperately so.

I would say a concussion, any broken bone, or any wound that requires stitches, constitutes at least a moderately serious injury.

AFAIK, there's no such thing as a non-serious concussion. If you have a head injury and pass out, vomit, or feel drowsy, you go directly to the Emergency Room, do not pass Go, do not collect $200.

Broken fingers merit a doctor visit, to get a splint. A fall that results in bone bruising--eh, monitor how you feel for a while, and if it's not getting better, if your mobility is restricted to the point where you can't do ordinary things like open a door, or sleep at night without waking up in pain, at least call a helpline.

I think, basically, anything that's gonna get worse (or already is getting worse) without professional treatment until you're unable to function or dead is serious. Broken fingers (as long as it isn't ALL of your fingers or the bone broke skin), bone bruising, minor fractures, they usually heal on their own, if imperfectly, and aren't life-threatening. But head injuries that result in a concussion, you run the risk of an underlying brain injury, so that can potentially be very serious, even fatal, and needs to be checked out. Head injuries, bleeding out (including coughing up blood), missing body parts, major fractures, anything that causes loss of sight or hearing or mobility, chronic pain (doesn't lessen after a few days or actually get worse), inability to breathe right, stuttering heartbeat, these all indicate serious injuries, from my layman's perspective. Or at least it's the kinda stuff that gets you fast-tracked through an ER in my experience.

Bruising of internal organs are serious. Any time there's blood in stool, urine, vomit merit a visit to the doctor. Same with coughing up blood. Bleeding from ear not from an ear injury (ie. not from ear infection, ruptured ear drum, or broken skin in ear) is a sign of serious head injury and require immediate visit to the emergency room.

Fever that doesn't come down with advil or tylenol, especially if it's 39°C/102.2°F or higher, is a visit to the doctor. Fever of 40°C/104°C or higher is a visit to the emergency room.

Concussions are always serious injuries. In general, head injuries should be taken seriously. There's varying degrees of serious, but if you have a head injury that's described as a concussion, it's possible you could have brain damage and you should definitely get checked.

Broken fingers are less serious, but should definitely be looked at.

Bone bruising, ditto.

Fractures, double ditto.

I'm guessing you live in a country that doesn't have national health care, but in general any sort of injury that impedes your life or leaves you in severe pain for any extended period of time should be looked at.

I've broken toes multiple times and never sought medical attention for it because I realized there wasn't much they could do (you can't really set a little toe). For a finger, I'd probably at least call a nurse's hotline for advice and then proceed from there. If I broke any other bones in my hand or foot, I think I'd seek medical attention then because I don't want to loose mobility in my hand and I wouldn't want to make a foot injury worse by walking on it when I really ought to be in a cast and use crutches.

I had a corneal abrasion once and went to the emergency room. They gave me pain killers and antiseptic eye drops, but I suppose the visit wasn't *strictly* necessary but it was nice to have some direction about how to care for the injury. I also had a follow-up visit with an ophthalmologist who told me there'd be no permanent scaring, and I guess that also wasn't necessary as it would have eventually become apparent that my vision was returning to normal. It was a relief to have someone tell me that ahead of time, though.

Sometimes seeking medical attention isn't about needing care that only doctors can provide, but rather making sure the extent of your injuries are known (in case you more injured than you think) and learning how best to help yourself heal. Find out if there is a nurses' hotline you can call if something happens so you can get advice about what to do if you aren't sure.

Any injury where you do not have the capability to help yourself, i.e. concussion, broke bones, deep cuts, fractures, heavy bleeding, etc.

concussions can be serious, especially if you're feeling the effects after a day or so of sleep. brain injuries and bruising are pretty serious
believe it or not, it's advised to sleep after a concussion so the brain can heal. waking people up all the time is outdated and incorrect like the heimlich manouver.

broken fingers less so, but you're going to want to make sure someone splints them properly so they heal correctly and don't hurt in the future.

bone bruising hurts like a mofo, but is less concerning. same with minor shin fractures. try not to stress those parts and let them heal.
