I haven't been in the Hetalia fandom for ages so correct me if I'm wrong, but... how does Russia (er, Ivan? I remember some parts of the fandom that were particular about naming conventions orz) come off as more asexual than anyone else in the series? He has that schlick with Lithuania (and Belarus and Ukraine and the US, if I'm remembering correctly?) right??

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think it was really a sexual thing? At least, it never came off that way to me...but then again, I also don't really ship him with anyone so, meh. -shrugs-

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 11:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait, are we talking asexual or aromantic here...?
And what kind of characterizations are we talking? The strictest sense of comic-canon-continuity Hetalia or the historical ones?

...I was thinking asexual, but I don't really know? Aromantic works pretty well too though, I guess.

I tend to go by canon, since people seem to love bringing politics into things and that can just get nasty

How would a country even be Asexual? Especially one of the largest ones?

Weeell... some parts of it are very cold?

(No, I really don't know, but then, Hetalia baffles me)

You're right, I'm sorry, that was not a good comment to make. I will not erase it, as you answered it, but I shouldn't have made it as a joke on asexuals.

Re: SA

ty for apologizing <3

I hear it so often on other sites that it's pretty much gotten on my last nerve ugh. ty though :)

No problem :) and sorry if I opened old wounds too. For what is worth, I don't think asexuals are frigid, it was just a very badly thought comment

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
Because, if what I understand from the canon is right, they really have sex to produce new countries? In fact, the few who've been shown to have kids ['Mama Greece' 'Grandpa Rome' etc] have shown to have died and the kid[s] replaced them as a country...And even then, we don't know that any of those actually gave birth to their successors. The only times we've 'seen' where a new country came from was one of the established countries literally finding them in the middle of no where.

So really...Why *wouldn't* they?

Re: SA

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-09-28 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
Because they seem to have hormones.

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
And? Asexuals have hormones too - that doesn't stop them from being asexual.

Re: SA

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-09-28 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
Yes, but Sweden, Belarus and France at the very least appear to be letting those hormones guide their actions at times. Which paints a pretty poor argument for "They are all asexual"

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 12:54 am (UTC)(link)
...Wait, I wasn't trying to say they were all asexual, the only character that was really under discussion was Russia so that's who I was talking about. There are obviously characters who are sexual [and as entertaining as it could be to watch, I doubt anyone really could build a case for France being asexual - and Sweden has been confirmed by Word Of God as gay, iirc, so that just couldn't work.]

So, no. I wasn't arguing that they all were - I wasn't even really arguing that *RUSSIA* was, tbh, though I can certainly see how it came off that way. I was just saying that I didn't see any of the interactions the other anon mentioned as really sexual interactions. The only character in the series I see as asexual is Switzerland...and that's totally headcanon.

Ah, okay, I misunderstod your comment about "they only reporduce to die and make new countries" as implying sex almost never happens because they almost never have it.

I should also add germany though... he has all that porn for a reason.

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
OH, no no XD I didn't ever mean that? I just meant we never actually see anything proving they reproduce through sex [it's only implied - and considering the habit of 'adopting' new countries, it's possible that Mama Greece and co. had just adopted their kids?] I'm sorry it came off that way!

He does, doesn't he? XD Though if that proves he's sexual or not could be debated...but, really, at the end of the day what does it really matter? It's all just for fun anyways.

Asexuals have hormones too? I mean, if a country is supposed to be reflective of the majority, then no. Probably no asexual countries (unless some asexuals move to Sealand hoho). But if it's just an individual basis because w/e then why not?

Re: SA

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 12:46 am (UTC)(link)
Anon above you/the person saying 'why not' so far

They don't really - unless everyone in Sweden is gay, since canonly the character is supposedly the only confirmed gay character in the strip. So I'm pretty sure it's got nothing to do with what the majority of the population's orientation is.

...But asexuals moving to Sealand...not there's an idea ;D

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought Belarus was stalking him and he was all lolnope? but I haven't been in fandom for ages either lmao

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh probably. My grasp of the series is pathetic, to say the least... orz

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this was it - she was...a crazy [knife-wielding] stalker that kept trying to get her brother [Russia] to marry him...and apparently she was the only one who scared him, or something like that.

As for America...I think that's mostly fanon based on the Cold War/US-Russian relations prior to the cold war [depending on who you talk to]?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 12:02 am (UTC)(link)
I thought it was fanon too..but like I said, it's been a while and I wasn't sure. I also don't really remember much Ukraine/Russia. How much has changed since I left fandom lol

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
-shrugs- Idk, I've mostly been on the edge of the fandom for quite sometime, so it's possible something's changed, but I was a little confused where they were getting Russa/Ukraine from too. I'd never really seen much of that around.

Nothing with the US or Ukraine. For Lithuania he does seem to be kind of into him and he refers to him as 'my ex' (although Lithuania doesn't seem to agree), but there's nothing sexual. For Belarus, Belarus is into HIM, but he's not shown reciprocating.

He's so emotionally childlike that I can see the argument that he's not really sexual, but that's YMMV and it's not at all 'canon.'
