The only thing religion does, all in all is make people think for themselves slightly less, and hey, for every person who followed their religion rather than their gut when their gut was right and the religion was wrong, you had a vice-versa.

And really, in a chaotic situation, order is the most important thing, so anything that helps keep order would be useful.

No. Stop right there. Don't talk about shit you don't know jack about. That is NOT the only thing religion does for people, and where the fuck do you get off telling people "what religion does for them" when you're not religious yourself? Where the hell do you get off telling people why they made a particular choice for themselves?

Also, religion is not what makes people do bad things instead of follow their gut. It's the other way around. People use religion as an excuse to do bad things that they would have wanted to do regardless. They also use about fifty billion other excuses, such as patriotism, science, cultural values, revenge, blame, etc, but religion is one of the most convenient ones to use.

I...well. I can see where the other anon got upset - saying that's the only thing religion does actually *is* wrong, and it's kinda Not Cool to imply that anyone who happens to believe in a religion is a sheep [and all that implies].

Religions do run charities [and yes, plenty of those charities don't discriminate against who gets help], amongst other things so...Yeah. I can see where it rubbed them the wrong way. [I won't speak for if you can, or cannot talk about it - frankly, everyone has a right to their opinion...but...maybe...try to find a little more out about things before you make assumptions about huge swathes of people because the most vocal of the groups tend to be asses?]

But other groups do community events and charities, and pretty much every other thing that religions do. The only thing that distinguishes religion from all the other groups out there, is that religion adds in far more 'telling people what to do.' And like I said, that's not always a bad thing - some people are far better off that way.

True, and I'm not arguing that - but the way you phrased what you said seemed to come off...well. 'Religion is bad!' - particularly since sheep really does have a negative connotation when it's used to refer to people.

'Sheep' usually does, it's true (unless you're a Christian and using it in a positive way) which is why I never said it.

But yes, I will agree that Religion does a lot to make some people happier.

I don't understand what you mean here. I consider myself religious, and I think for myself in any given situation just fine. I don't think I'm unique in that, either. Am I missing something in your assertion that would clarify?
