Disasters happen all the time. You'll see heroes and villian emerge, people break and people become better then they ever thought. Some are forever scarred, some brush it off and barely think about it.

It's happened before, it'll happen again. Don't worry too much.

But I gotta say: religion don't mean shit in this. If a disaster happens on some atheist boat cruise or something, you'll see all the same types emerge.

+1 to this.

Disasters happen all the time.

This is what bothers me most about this secret, besides the idea that religion is the only thing that makes people hate each other (fandom should have cured anyone of that belief by now): this stuff goes down all the time and sometimes the good people end up making things just as bad as the bad people.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Yyyyyyyyyyep. Sorry OP. 2/10?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Human imperfection and shittiness and evil aren't caused by religion. They're the result of humans being imperfect, and sometimes shitty, and sometimes evil. Were there no religion, there would still be people doing shitty things.

I mean, did you even read the quote? The one that you included in your very own secret? "As a species we're fundamentally insane. Put more than two of us in a room, we pick sides and start dreaming up reasons to kill each other." It's not religion, it's just the way human beings work.

Religion doesn't mean jack shit when it comes to people either being dicks and leaving others to die, or helping people out. Atheists are just as likely to go either way as a person from any religion.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-27 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah it's not like religous people have helped people in times of disaster or crisis or even had their religion help them pull through the aftermath of said disaster OH WAIT

assholes are going to be assholes, regardless of if they worship god, satan, buddha, or nothing at all. Atheist people can rant about how homeless people with no cars 'deserved' to get killed by natural disasters, and religious people can be understanding, caring, and supportive of a stranger in need. You're just as guilty of drawing lines in the sand as the religious people you hate.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
This exactly. Also I've come across atheist guys who were homophobic and misogynistic. So that's not something that only religious extremists are capable of.

" Atheist people can rant about how homeless people with no cars 'deserved' to get killed by natural disasters, and religious people can be understanding, caring, and supportive" [citation needed]

Pat Robertson springs immediately to mind as the Golden Exception to that rule, anon. "HAITI GOT WHAT IT DESERVED 'CAUSE O' THE VOOOOOODOOOOOOOOO!" *thumps Bible*

Name me one source, ANY source, anon where a non-religious person said victims of a natural disaster got exactly what they deserved. More often than not, that's the sole domain of those who absolutely do NOT comprehend the Biblical account of the Flood. IMO.

I don't know, what's worse - people taking advantage of a disaster to promote their religion, or taking advantage of a disaster to make a profit? They're both shitty things to do. Ms Carmody got people killed because people turning to her in a time of crisis gave her an ego boost, but so did the protagonist's neighbour, for precisely the same reason: he thought he was smarter than everyone else, didn't want to look weak, and desperately wanted to be right when the protagonist was wrong.

Whereas the biker dude who sacrificed himself to try to get the shotgun was also openly religious, but not a dickhole bent on exploiting the situation.

That said I fucking loved that movie. It had one of the best endings I've ever seen in a horror film. I wish there was more like it.

Religion may be used as the justification for doing horrible things to other people, but that's not where the ideas for these things come from. That's from human nature.

Seriously, stop blaming religion. Is it flawed? Yes. But so are we, so there you go.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
This. Plus, if you actually look at the core tenets of most religions they aren't bad things - and religions can, and do, do good things as well as bad ones.

Yes, people do use religion as justifications for horrible things they do - but people have been known to do that for causes that are completely unrelated to religion as well.

So, religion =/= The Root of All Evil

[Sorry for replying to comment like this - it wasn't aimed at you. I'm just..a little tired of the automatic 'OMG, RELIGION IS COMPLETELY EEEEEVIIIIIIL AND MUST BE TO BLAME!' response that most people in fandom [that I've run across] seem to have.]

I keep thinking of that comparison the Dalai Lama made recently about religion vs ethics:

Ethics are like water. You have to have it to survive. It's pure, it's good, and you can live just with that.

Religion is like tea. It's something added to the water. Different cultures make it different ways. Different people drink it different ways. Some people don't care for it at all. That's fine. You won't die without tea. You will die without water.

If you start with crap water, you're going to have crap tea.

It does kind of warm my heart to see so many people pointing out that people are kind of awful with or without religion (is that sad?), when usually you see the quote-unquote-edgy types talk about how religion is the worst thing ever and the cause of all strife and war.

Do people seriously still drop this dumb one?

No, ideas effect how you act and behave, and the substance of those beliefs has relevance.

Yes other factors are likely more important, but that doesn't mean religion is entirely irrelevant here. There's no way you would extend this trend of thought to any other set of ideologies or beliefs, so why use it here?

The only thing religion does, all in all is make people think for themselves slightly less, and hey, for every person who followed their religion rather than their gut when their gut was right and the religion was wrong, you had a vice-versa.

And really, in a chaotic situation, order is the most important thing, so anything that helps keep order would be useful.

I think you got the movie wrong, Anon.

Mrs. Carmody wasn't horrible because she was a religious person. She was a horrible person, who happened to be a religious fanatic, and that's a huge difference.

Seriously? Read the book. It explains the situation of the poor people in the supermarket a lot better and it doesn't have that stupid ending (I know, I know, King liked it. But that doesn't mean I have to like it)

actually religious people have, in the past, comprised a majority of relief efforts post-disasters, and that persists to this day. there are people who think prayer is all they need to better their situation, and then there are people - the vast majority of the religious, as well - who respond to disasters through charity and volunteer efforts because they love their fellow human beings. don't be so melodramatic.
