yeah it's not like religous people have helped people in times of disaster or crisis or even had their religion help them pull through the aftermath of said disaster OH WAIT

assholes are going to be assholes, regardless of if they worship god, satan, buddha, or nothing at all. Atheist people can rant about how homeless people with no cars 'deserved' to get killed by natural disasters, and religious people can be understanding, caring, and supportive of a stranger in need. You're just as guilty of drawing lines in the sand as the religious people you hate.

This exactly. Also I've come across atheist guys who were homophobic and misogynistic. So that's not something that only religious extremists are capable of.

Lemme know if you come across atheist guys who aren't homophobic and misogynistic. I'd like some confirmation they actually exist in real life.

*sigh*

I...I know some agnostic ones? Does that count?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-28 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
This is so outrageous to me I can't tell if you're joking or not. I know several atheist men who are not homophobic and misogynistic, and are in fact decent people, and I even plan on marrying one next year.

I feel like I must be missing a joke here.

iirc anonymouslyyrs is from rural bible belt so not many atheists there

so she never met a not homophobic and not misogynistic atheist man

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-09-28 07:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not really joking. I'd like to believe they are out there I'm just stating I've never met them.

I've actually met about six atheist men in real life, all of whom were utter misogynists and two of them I can confirm where self-admittedly homophobic, and another one who claimed not to be homophobic but did and said homophobic things. And I don't believe I'm the only one who has had these experiences. I've seen quite a bit of discussion about sexism and misogyny in the atheist community online.

I'd like to clarify that I myself am an atheist.

Glad for the confirmation and congratulations!

Atheist men are disproportionately white, middleclass, and educated. At least compared to the norm.

Guess what group this has tremendous overlap with (it's the group which has the lowest rate of misogyny and homophobia - slightly more nuanced if we introduce white middleclass women who ironically enough by many metrics are less homophobic yet more misogynistic but I'll let the generalisation stand)

Perhaps the mistake you're mistaking is that a lot, and I mean an awful lot, of people are homophobic and misogynistic?

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-09-28 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
What mistake do you think I'm making? I'm not claiming all atheist men are homophobic and misogynistic. Just that I've never met any who weren't so it isn't even uncommon. All I really did was reiterate the anon's point that atheism isn't some magical cure for homophobia and misogyny.

But they justify their homophobia/misogyny/racism with science!

That makes it all better.

" Atheist people can rant about how homeless people with no cars 'deserved' to get killed by natural disasters, and religious people can be understanding, caring, and supportive" [citation needed]

Pat Robertson springs immediately to mind as the Golden Exception to that rule, anon. "HAITI GOT WHAT IT DESERVED 'CAUSE O' THE VOOOOOODOOOOOOOOO!" *thumps Bible*

Name me one source, ANY source, anon where a non-religious person said victims of a natural disaster got exactly what they deserved. More often than not, that's the sole domain of those who absolutely do NOT comprehend the Biblical account of the Flood. IMO.

Don't forget Jerry Fallwell blaming Katrina on the gays!
