I think the beauty of Hetalia is that you can interpret the characters however the hell you want. It's tough to figure out "canon" when the comics themselves aren't portraying history accurately, indulging in stereotypes that weren't around during WWII or beforehand, and embodying complex entities like countries as adorable bishonen whose idea of "war" is to tackle each other suggestively.

It's FUN. It's ENTERTAINMENT. If some people want to write and read about Russia raping other countries, fine. If you want to write and read about Russia being asexual, aromantic or not, fine. So long as people understand that there's no actual "right way" to be doing this, everything should be fine. It's too much of a tangled mess of fiction, history, current events, folklore, historical fiction and porn to have a real "canon" going on.

Personally, I get all kinds of guilty pleasure over Russia/America material. UNF, I'm so anti-patriotic ...
