BANANAS

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-09-28 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you peel them from the stem or the bottom?

I find it easier to pinch the bottom of the banana and peel it that way instead of biting, cutting, or struggling with the stem. My mom says I've done this since I was two and was left alone with a bag of fruit.

The only other time I've seen this method used was at the zoo and a monkey did it. My family makes fun of me for it and so far everyone who has seen me do it has either laughed or been amazed.

Anyone else out there peel bananas from the bottom?

iirc, that's how primates all do it, because it IS easier. Humans are the odd ones out going by the stem.

I didn't know that. How weird!

That was the favorite fun fact of one of high school friends, whenever she was teased for opening them that way.

I knew bottom-peeling was a thing, and ostensibly is easier than stem-peeling...I've just always peeled from the top and never had a problem unless the banana was under-ripe.

Hmm, I like when my bananas are firm and sometimes a little green. Maybe that's why I picked up that habit?

sometimes? Usually I peel from the stem but if it refuses to co-operate then I flip it turnways. It seems weird that you would be laughed at for it, it's just a banana after all!

That's the correct way! I saw once a thing that said that we humans are the only ones to peel them "wrong", and that every animal does it from the bottom like it should be.

Having said that, I tried a couple times from the bottom and got it all smashed, so I keep peeling from the stem and feeling that I'm doing it wrong xD

Re: BANANAS

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-09-28 11:18 pm (UTC)(link)
I wonder why that is? I guess I know what I'm googling tonight! :)

If I try peeling from the stem half the time the top part gets smushy. I've never had a smashed bit on the bottom. I only use my thumb and forefinger and it doesn't take all that much pressure. Even for bananas that are still a little green.

I love the idea that there's a right and wrong way to peel a banana.

I know a lot of people who go from the bottom. So you're not alone.

I go from the stem. My nails are always long enough that I just dig under the stem and pull. It makes a nice handle.

Re: BANANAS

Vindication! My mother swears I have to be the only person who does it that way.

I like the way I do it because afterwards I can use the stem to carry the banana peel without the other peels dangling further down everywhere.

... oh goodness that sounds a lot easier. I basically either cut the stem or, if I don't have a knife or scissors or anything, end up kind of picking at the stem until I can get it open. Your way sounds a lot better, tbh.

I saw the bottom thing on tumblr, tried it, and I will never do it from the stem again.

I do it from the stem but my friend Angie does it from the bottom. I make fun of her for it. I would probably make fun of you for it too, but it's ok because the both of you will laugh at me when I squish the top of my banana while trying to open it.

But...you just twist the stem, the skin cracks, and it's way easy to peel? I've honestly never seen anyone peel from the bottom, and I'm not exactly familiar with monkeys either. Kinda weird to think that's a thing.

(Then again, I eat the outsides of candy bars first, then the inside. I have no room to talk about weird eating habits.)

I peel from the stem because I use either a thumbnail or a knife to slit it open and I feel like a fruit-themed Jack the Ripper. I know it's the wrong way, but the right way is less fun.

I had no idea that peeling-from-the-bottom was a thing, and I'm actually having kind of a hard time imagining how it works. I mean, there's nothing down there to grab hold of...

Peeling from the stem has always been easy for me. I used to just grab the stem and pull it back, but for the past couple of years I've been making a little slit with my thumbnail to "start" it. Super simple.

Both ends.

But it depends on how green or ripe the banana is, because if breaking it from either end will destroy the banana, I'm bringing out the butter knife.

I like to cut the banana in half, then peel from the exposed edges. I always think I'll just eat one half now and eat the other later. I've preferred it that way for as long as I can remember.

My mother said I liked those little mini bananas when I was a kid so I guess it's something to do with my preference towards a smaller portion size, and taking advantage of the fact cutting larger bananas down tends to make peeling more managable. It's weird, I know. It's probably psychological.

from the stem. I've been doing it for so long it's becoming a habit of me to do so when someone offered a banana.

No. OMG, you're so weird.

:)

I can't imagine from the bottom, that little black 'cap' seems a lot more difficult to mess with than the stem. Of course, i rarely eat bananas, and when i do they're pretty green, so the stem just snaps - very easy!
