I've never been suicidal, but one day, for some reason, I was imagining what it would be like if I had a terrible accident and was completely paralyzed - I think I even threw in blindness for extra drama - and I realized that in that situation I would be so completely helpless that I couldn't even kill myself if I wanted to. It was an absolutely terrifying thought. I think I'm far more scared of ever being in such a situation than I am of dying. Even a relatively slow, painful death would be preferable, I think, to not being able to do hardly anything and just lying there, quietly going insane until I get pneumonia or something.

Oh god. Why would you remind me? My greatest fear on earth -- I mean LITERALLY the one thing that terrifies me more than anything else I can possibly imagine -- is being brain-damaged to the point of losing all my intelligence and reason and not being able to think or reason or comprehend. The idea of living like that, and not being able to even comprehend my situation so that I can end it, is so horrifying I seriously can't even. I'm sure that for some other people, it's not the worst prospect they can imagine, but for me personally it's worse than anything I can think of.

It's so frightening I actually once thought about asking my sister to promise to murder me if that ever happened to me, but I don't want her to get caught and jailed or anything, or get totally fucked-up by the experience.

Oh God, that terrifies me to the same degree as well. I just don't know what I'd do with myself. I'm kind of glad I'm not the only one with this fear.

I think if you're ever that badly injured, the Do Not Resuscitate clause could come into effect, if you have one. Or, alternatively, you'd probably be hooked up to a tube because the lack of higher brain functions means you can't eat, and have a clause in your will that says you'd want the plug pulled. (I don't know what it's called, but as soon as I turn twenty, I'm getting one of those.)

I feel bound to point out that most people in those situations neither go insane, nor are they suicidal. In fact, the greater risk they face is that able-bodied people will assume their situation is "not worth living" and take the decision out of their hands, even though they want to live. This becomes especially insidious where other people think they should make a decision to have support switched off, or not have an illness treated, or seek assisted suicide. It starts to make it seem like they are being selfish for wanting to live.

I feel I have to bring it up, because every so often a charismatic, articulate person who is very disabled wants the right to be killed by others without the others ending up in court, which of course the court system cannot guarantee, and the media sets up this narrative of how nightmarishly unworth living such a disabled life is, how the person can no longer contribute like they used to, how we should have sweeping changes to the law so that people aren't prosecuted for killing the severely disabled as long as they "asked", and everyone basically ignores that fact that most disabled people, even most people who are completely paralysed, do not want such a law to come in, and are afraid of what would happen if it did. That such a law would be dangerous.

I don't even know what this comment means.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 03:02 pm (UTC)(link)
If this has ever, ever happened in the media, it certainly hasn't happened where I live, in the U.S. The most prominent advocate of assisted suicide here is Dr. Kevorkian, who, together with his patients/victims, is generally regarded as creepy and sketchy (no judgement on the principle he was fighting for, but he was a singularly non-charismatic advocate for it).

The other famous cases have been right-to-die cases involving unconscious or unresponsive patients. Unless the person you replied to can cite an actual charismatic, disabled assisted suicide advocate who was fawned over by the press and showered with legislation, I will not believe such a person exists.

I still have no idea what you're talking about. What do you mean by "such a person exists"? Such a person as what? I'm just not sure what you're trying to say...

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I *think* the anon above is talking about how some people with severe disabilities or on life support are actually happy and doesn't want to die*. The anon is afraid that, if assisted suicide laws pass, relatives and friends might use the laws to send their "loved ones" to "a better place" without getting their consent or without seeking adaquate treatment for their conditions. The laws have the potential to be greatly abused.

Anyway, this is what I got from the anon's post. I'm not sure if this is their exact message.

*The only example that comes to mind right now are people with locked-in syndrome. They are aware of their surroundings but cannot express themselves in the usual ways because of severe muscular paralysis, hence "locked-in." Friends and relatives often mistaken them for being vegetables because of the lack of communication.
