I agree. I, too, OP, am a hipster who is above English-language pop and desperately holding onto my denial. I mean, I know it's okay to like catchy foreign songs because they're foreign, the hipster gods said so. But I don't know if it still counts if I hear the English versions and are forced to face the devastating fact that all pop everywhere is basically the same vapid tripe and I've been liking it all along, though. I'm desperate for answers, here!

If they go back to listening to it in the other language that's okay though right? Foreign loophole in the taste clause? I can still be cool?

Help!

My gods, I love this comment.

Missing the point, I think. I don't think the secret poster is necessarily a hipster.

Sometimes, I like the way a song sounds, but the lyrics stop me from liking it, because they're too stupid (not just "mindless," but really DUMB), or offensive. And I don't have to worry about that if I can't understand the lyrics.

But, if it makes you feel good to imagine that anyone who prefers not to heard the dumb lyrics is just doing what the "hipster gods" told them, then...

The "hipster" thing is really starting to get old IMO.

The point was that all pop is vapid and mindless and it's okay to like vapid and mindless music. Just because lyrics are vapid doesn't mean the music isn't well-made or that the beats aren't catchy. Most people agree that pop is meaningless and vapid, but the point of pop is not to be meaningful and poetic and the OP of this secret is sort of dumb for expecting it to be anything else, no matter what language it's in.

But, if it makes you feel good to imagine that there's no point in that, then...

Have a nice day. :)

I agree with your broad point, but I think it's a little wrong to describe pop music as "meaningless and vapid." It's meaningless in terms of the lyrics, sure, but it's emotionally meaningful and resonant with people or it wouldn't be as popular as it is.

I agree that liking one kind of pop music over another, or dismissing a pop song solely because of the shallowness of the lyrics, misses the point of pop music. But I disagree that pop music is inherently meaningless / unserious / worthless / vapid. Pop music is both cool and rad and worth taking seriously because it satisfies real (if adolescent) emotional needs.

Pop lyrics, due to their nursery-rhyme repetition and overwhelming presence in the sound mix, can become extremely annoying, detracting from the catchy appeal of an otherwise-enjoyable piece of music. It is perfectly fair to dislike English pop as opposed to non-English pop for this reason and there's nothing 'hipster' about it.

"The "hipster" thing is really starting to get old IMO."

The problem is that it's an actual thing. Actual people think like this.

And it rears its head everywhere. And it's annoying.
