I agree. I, too, OP, am a hipster who is above English-language pop and desperately holding onto my denial. I mean, I know it's okay to like catchy foreign songs because they're foreign, the hipster gods said so. But I don't know if it still counts if I hear the English versions and are forced to face the devastating fact that all pop everywhere is basically the same vapid tripe and I've been liking it all along, though. I'm desperate for answers, here!

If they go back to listening to it in the other language that's okay though right? Foreign loophole in the taste clause? I can still be cool?

Help!

My gods, I love this comment.

Missing the point, I think. I don't think the secret poster is necessarily a hipster.

Sometimes, I like the way a song sounds, but the lyrics stop me from liking it, because they're too stupid (not just "mindless," but really DUMB), or offensive. And I don't have to worry about that if I can't understand the lyrics.

But, if it makes you feel good to imagine that anyone who prefers not to heard the dumb lyrics is just doing what the "hipster gods" told them, then...

The "hipster" thing is really starting to get old IMO.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
The point was that all pop is vapid and mindless and it's okay to like vapid and mindless music. Just because lyrics are vapid doesn't mean the music isn't well-made or that the beats aren't catchy. Most people agree that pop is meaningless and vapid, but the point of pop is not to be meaningful and poetic and the OP of this secret is sort of dumb for expecting it to be anything else, no matter what language it's in.

But, if it makes you feel good to imagine that there's no point in that, then...

Have a nice day. :)

"The "hipster" thing is really starting to get old IMO."

The problem is that it's an actual thing. Actual people think like this.

And it rears its head everywhere. And it's annoying.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 07:54 pm (UTC)(link)
That's not surprising. Pop is the cotton-candy of music all over the world, but you can almost pretend it's deep and meaningful if you don't understand it. XD

Oh, the songs that I liked before understanding the words!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Considering I've done this with songs that already were in my language, I understand perfectly.

The songs I liked before I knew the lyrics! Good times. XD

Yeah, I've had those moments, sorta-singing along to to the song, and then I start listening and I start going "Huh? Wait, what? The what now? No, dammit! Sonnova bitch, I really liked that song."

Right there with you. Sometimes I make up my own lyrics.

I listen to foreign rap for the same reason too.

I love pop songs, so English, Korean, it's all the same to me.

Massive love for you using Rania as an example because Dr. Feelgood is my favourite kind of pop.

This! RaNia love! <3

Haha, I strangely get a kick out of listening to non-Kpop songs performed by K-Pop bands.
This one is my favourite, and I admit I laughed the first time I watched the video: (the original song is a rather bland but catchy and danceable hit from the 80s about people dancing in a club)

They look so intense...

I used to be just like you. I even said to myself, "You know, self, if you looked at the translated lyrics of your favourite non-english songs, you'd hate them. You definitely'd hang your head in shame at your mad lack of taste."

But then I realised that amazing lyrics are the cherries on top of the my auralgasms. Then I was even able to listen to bad English rappers too, because even they can have the bestest beats. My life changed that day.

Truism!

There's this belief that a song must have decent lyrics in order to be good, but I think that completely ignores the fact that music is really about, well, the music. And music doesn't have to have lyrics at all to touch a person in some way.

I have a weird thing for the English version of The Boys. Just. "This is deep in my heart, my heeaaaaaart" makes me crack up. Every time.

Me, if I'm listening to KPop, I can't listen to KPop artists in Japanese. I can deal with KARA and After School, but SNSD was just not very good at Japanese for a long time and it was very noticeable to me.

Idk, I kind of agree with you. I mean, I'm more into Jpop and they don't really do English-language covers even when performing in English-speaking countries. But depending on the song, most of them are written to be performed in that language, so here's bound to be issues and things lost in translation.

The lyrics issue doesn't bother me, since I speak a fair amount of Japanese and understand quite a bit of it, lol.

Same here. K-Pop in Japanese bothers me way more. It sounds weird to me, like they aren't even trying to sing in correct Japanese. I don't even speak Japanese, so I don't know why it bothers me so much.

"The Boys" is awesome though, and I much prefer the English version. Those weird ass lyrics are hilarious, especially, "Call an emergency, I'm watching the phone ring."

to be fair, though, a lot of the beauty of the lyrics is probably lost in translation. I'm not saying it is necessarily in this situation, but nuance and poetry are important to writing lyrics and most translations (especially quick fan-translations) don't take the time and effort necessary to make sure the magic or the original ends up in the English version.

(Gackt lyrics always pop into my head for some reason when thinking about this-- "daremo inai kono heya de" sounds a lot more romantic than "in this empty room" even though the translation is perfectly fine)

Eh, the lyrics are often heavily simplified when they make an English version.

And just like another commenter said, sometimes direct translations just don't work at all. The Little Mermaid's second German dub is far closer to the original English lyrics, but ho boy do they sound ridiculous in German. And getting someone with a soul-y voice for Ariel -- well, I'm getting sidetracked again, welp!

For anyone who's easily entertained, have some songs with lyrics that are legitimately good. Many of which were written or co-written by *gasp* ACTUAL IDOLS. I've bolded the names of the performers. There are a lot of shockingly talented kids in K-pop.

I know what you mean. I have a brain that hangs on to lyrics really well, so Kpop is both frustrating, because I DON'T know the words, and a relief, because I hate when a catchy song gets stupid lyrics stuck in my head.

Some english versions are better than others though, for sure. UKiss' english version of 'Stop Girl' is totally my jam right now.
