Well, then you're probably a racist. Sorry!

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 07:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I think the key word was "arbitrarily," not "assigned races."

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 07:57 pm (UTC)(link)
Could you explain your reasoning? I don't get it.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Different Anon here.

The reasoning I see is, since almost the beginning of Homestuck the kids have been portrayed in officially-endorsed merchandise as white pretty much all of the time. Only recently have prints been added to the print shop that shows them as other races.

The stickers pictured are one of the only officially endorsed art where some of them are other races, and they're being given for free to people who donated.

The creator of Homestuck has said the characters have no set race and whatever you think is true.

The problem lies in the fact that all the people freaking out about the free, teensy stickers (about the size of dimes, I think?) show them as being non-white, when all previous art showed them as white.

No one ever raised a stink about them 'having a set race' when they were depicted as white, because they had the (admittedly quite widespread, but still racist) view that white is 'normal' and anything else is 'abnormal'.

Interesting. Thanks for the info! And yeah, I can see how that would be problematic.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 09:45 pm (UTC)(link)
DA Pretty much. The most telling moment was when the person organizing the tarot project announced that the artists would be allowed to revise their work to be more inclusive if they so wished, and the "race doesn't matter" people promptly threw a shitfit. It only didn't matter when the kids were all exclusively portrayed as white, apparently.

I know zilch about Homestuck but i was under the assumption that they weren't human....

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 05:16 am (UTC)(link)
The original 4 and their beta counterparts (I think that's what the newer 4 are? I really only skim the comic from time to time myself) are human clone things, but still human. The rest are a bunch of weirdo aliens.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 05:32 am (UTC)(link)
The original 4 are actually the beta kids, the newer 4 are the alphas.

The trolls and the carapaces aren't human, but the humans are.

Isn't the white they are depicted as white the lack of color, not white the human skintone?

That's a big difference.

Most of the complaints I have see is that the races don't make sense based on how some of them are related and not the same color. Or how some where described as being pale but are now depicted as dark.

Granted, I don't read the thing. I just follow many people who do so this is all second hand.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 03:21 pm (UTC)(link)
in comic, they are white-the-color-of-paper, but on prints, a full set of homestuck tarot, calendars, and other past official merchandise, they've always been Caucasian. granted, none of these are drawn by the author, but they're drawn by members of the art team (usually) or submitted to him and picked from amongst a pool of options, and sold in the official online store.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 07:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I...think you might be confused.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
go back to tumblr

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
Its not like the guy who wrote the comic deliberately made them a-racial or anything oh wait.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:23 pm (UTC)(link)
lmao you are dumb as shit if you bought Hussie's nonsense about being "aracial"

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
But it's not nonsense. Race is a social construct; it's not real*. That's why you'll find different conceptions of race in different cultures.

*This, of course, does not mean that the construct is not real in its consequences, as with any other construct. Obviously, the racial distinctions we've created have a very real impact on people's lives, which absolutely sucks.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:44 pm (UTC)(link)
if it has real impact then you are aware your comment is worthless in this discussion, correct?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
The discussion revolves around whether the idea of a person being "aracial" is ridiculous or not. Pointing out that racial distinctions are bullshit anyway is completely relevant, regardless of the fact that our society insists on behaving as if something imaginary is real.

That what I think is great, though, that the "aracial" line is totally ridiculous, but a bunch of fanartists have decided to act as though it's not nonsense, and thereby create a much more diverse fanon consensus for how it's acceptable to depict those characters.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:52 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah I like the fanart, I just don't like the people who delude themselves into thinking hussie is some savior
