No, these characters are human. They are drawn with white (as in the color white) skin and as little racial signifiers as a human figure can have- the author says they are raceless and the reader can project any ethnicity they want onto them. Many would say that he hasn't done a great job of writing them that way, and especially early in the comic there are several different points where he seems to forget this and says something that tends to imply they are white. Official merchandise, like these stickers, often has them more human looking than the comic's art with random races.

Nah, the four main characters are human- it's just most of the secondary cast that isn't. They are, however, drawn in a style that makes it impossible to tell what race they are; according to the creator they're supposed to be aracial in canon.

You know, I waffled on this one, but honestly, all the new art has been pretty good, so I didn't care all that much. Like that one tarot card with mom and dad? The art got better!

I ship in homestuck based entirely on fanart (cause lets face it, it's easy to ship here). If they have so much as one good art piece that sells me, I'm sold. Even and especially when it's crackship or contradicts my other ships.

Cannonly, they are still pigment-less anyway. It's only if hussie does it that I'd have a problem, because then he'd be contradicting what he laid down. The rest is all fanart, sanctioned or unsanctioned. Let the artists draw them as they want*.

*Unless you change the hair. I don't care what color their skin is but fuck you, don't mess with that.

Hair color isn't canon either? I've seen some great pink-haired Roxys, for instance, and way back in the baby stages of Homestuck fandom most people thought Dave was a ginger or readhead instead of blond (because of a comment Rose makes about his 'ginger tufts' sticking out from a pile of smuppets)

I will admit I'm weirded out when John and Jade don't have like, dark or black hair though.

This is sort of interesting. I think Hussie is kidding himself to draw them white (as in #FFFFFF, not as in caucasian) and pretend that counts as making them "aracial." The simple fact is that they read as caucasian, regardless of what the author's putative intent is.

But I actually love that once the whole "aracial" thing came out, people started drawing them as all sorts of different races. They took Hussie's statement that there was no canonical race for any of the kids at face value, even though that statement was totally absurd, and used it to significantly change the way those characters are represented in fandom.

I think it's great when I see south asian John or black Rose or whatever. I think it's awesome and there should be more of it.

i get irrationally annoyed when people get worked up about race issues about a webcomic which isn't even mean to be related to race issues. so. there. i think it harms rather than helps the "improve race relations" issues when such fusses are made over such non-significant things. so. yeah.

(disclaimer: blah blah i am not white or american, i am pretty drunk so whatver, etc, I think it's pretty sad and a mark of stupid social-justice-rascism-issues have gotten on the internet that my drunk self even thinks it might be necessary to say such disclaimery things in this comment.)

I won't argue that hussie's "aracial" thing, as nice of a bone as it was to throw to us, wasn't kind of a hilarious backpedal after he implied their whiteness for years, but arguing that "well they're literally white, just like trolls are literally grey" doesn't quite...work? The early MSPA adventures portrayed pretty much everything as black&white, and Problem Sleuth only used color to emphasize status effects or special objects. (When Problem Sleuth summons some jazz musicians (http://www.mspaintadventures.com/?s=4&p=000920) who are pretty obviously supposed to be black, their skin is as blank as PS's ugly stick figure mug.) When the comic started, it was closer to problem sleuth's use of color. The comic had gradually shifted to full color by the time the trolls were revealed, but previous designs - such as the humans and their clothes and their houses - stayed colorless.

So what I am saying is hussie is by no means some champion of araciality, but there is room to at least interpret the kids as having skin tones other than light as "fuck."
