Or they're familiar with sites that don't allow the /. Or they want an easier search term (seriously, / in google is not a fun experience. "X" must be much easier to find.) Or they're not into getting that top/bottom feeling that the beloved forward slash invokes.

I don't use X because I've never seen it really done, but I'm starting to think people who do are better at fandom and the internet than I am. :/

More likely they came from a different fannish tradition and just kept going. But yeah, using search engine phrase searches is probably a lot easier with the x.

Probably. Still, there are a lot of possible reasons for X over / (assuming that people even think about things like that) and they seem a might more complicated than "just a weeaboo."

Basically came here to say this. "/" really makes searching a pain in the ass in some places.

This; I've slowly been doing more Mulder x Scully (or w/e ship I want at the time) than Mulder/Scully, because of places like Tumblr not allowing for searching of Mulder/Scully. If I see people writing stuff with the x, I'm assuming they're more used to Tumblr than anything.

THIS. I started using "x" because I would make folders on my computer for fanart of each ship I liked, and Microsoft doesn't allow you to use "/" when naming a folder. It's the same reason I started using dashes instead of slashes when writing the date.
