Or they're familiar with sites that don't allow the /. Or they want an easier search term (seriously, / in google is not a fun experience. "X" must be much easier to find.) Or they're not into getting that top/bottom feeling that the beloved forward slash invokes.

I don't use X because I've never seen it really done, but I'm starting to think people who do are better at fandom and the internet than I am. :/

I don't get it. Is the 'x' somehow more Japanese?

This seems so random! I kind of love you for it.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone once told me that in slash pairings, the '/' is to signify a top an bottom. So, for example, if you slash Bill and Jack, Bill/Jack will say Bill is top and Jack is bottom, while Jack/Bill is the other way around.

I don't know how many people see it that way, too, but when I ship a couple who I see as equals or interchanging (which is most of my pairings, really) I'd rather not use '/'.

I've always seen '/' as sexual or romantic pairing and 'x' or '&' as friendship pairing. I guess we must read in different circles.

x is still better than 90% of name smushes. I'd take CloudxTifa over Cloti anyday.

I usually use a slash, but tags on tumblr don't work with a /, so I started typing character x character over there. I kind of hate it, but it's still better than using silly shipnames.

...yeah, that is pretty dumb.

I prefer "x" because I think it's more visually clean and aesthetically appealing. I always put a space in between the names and the "x" though, otherwise it looks messy and confusing. So, for example (to take one of my OTPs off the top of my head):

Bleh: JohnxVriska
Better: John/Vriska
Best: John x Vriska

The whole "top/bottom" thing makes sense, but I'd never heard of it before reading these comments. I tend to ship pairings as couples and not just for the porn, so it feels a little weird to use it that way for me, but whatever works, I guess. If I'm listing pairings I tend to alphabetize the names so as not to be giving an indication as to who I think is "better" or "in charge" but perhaps one of the reasons I do this is that the majority of my ships are het.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
As it were, I only use x in Gundam Wing fandom, where the character shorthand is numbers and letters anyway. Ships tend to look like algebraic expressions, but hey, it's efficient.

Depends on the website for me. If it's something like AO3 or LJ where a '/' is fine, then I tend to look down on anyone who uses 'x'. But if it's some place like Tumblr or anywhere that doesn't really allow for '/', then as much as I still dislike it I understand it better. These days, if I see an 'x' on a /-friendly site, I'll still give that fic a chance on the assumption the author comes from a not-/-friendly site, but I tend to be much more critical of those fics as in my experience the not-/-friendly sites are...not known for the quality of their fics.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm just too used to "/" being used in an either-or context in language.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Back when I posted my fanfiction on FFN (woe) the common practice always seemed to be blah/blah when there was nothing explicitly sexual, and blahxblah when there was something explicitly sexual in the fic.

I assumed this still applied. Obviously not.

Some people frequent sites that don't like the / marking. For me it's just habit to use NamexName than to try and keep straight which site lets me do / and which requires X.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
Wait... so what does it mean if I just write NameName? No / or x? I didn't realize that how you write a name 'coupling' had anything to do with anything...

I always thought x was for het parings, and that / was for slash pairings (hence the name).

It could be, but I wasn't even aware that NamexName was more common in Japanese fandoms for a long time, and I'm familiar with the convention from Tumblr, where having slashes in your tags can be a problem. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of younger fans who get into online fandom via Tumblr aren't as familiar with the Name/Name convention.

[identity profile] cimikat.livejournal.com 2012-09-29 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Really? My thought has always been the opposite. Personally I like to write out my ship names as "Person x Person" because, to me, it makes the relationship in the pairing feel more balanced. I guess I think of it in math terms. With multiplication (ie x), the order doesn't really matter, so both individuals are equal. With division (ie /), order definately matters, implying somehow that one partner is stronger or more important than the other. And myself, I prefer my ships to be on a fairly equal power standing with each other. (also of note, I've always believed x or / to indicate sex or romance, while + means friendship)

Now this is definately subjective reasoning on my part. Obviously ship naming conventions vary by fandom, and nowhere have I found a definate guide on how to write out a ship name. I guess I should mention that I'm in my mid-twenties, and that I've been in a variety of fandoms, from anime to American comics, and for the most part haven't changed my ship naming preference.

CONSENSUS FOR THIS THREAD

Nobody knows what the fuck the difference is between AxB and A/B.

....what's the difference? I pretty much freely and unthinkingly alternate between the two.

Maaaan, would so much prefer the x for sites like tumblr so as to avoid the name smushes.

The only real place I've seen (and use it) is tumblr, because the tagging system just breaks when you try and add a '/' to things.

Apart from that... I'm glad you recognise that your prejudice is stupid?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-29 11:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I seem to remember AxB being more common than A/B like around 2000, maybe.
Of course, since I'm old, my memory might be lagging.
