I prefer "x" because I think it's more visually clean and aesthetically appealing. I always put a space in between the names and the "x" though, otherwise it looks messy and confusing. So, for example (to take one of my OTPs off the top of my head):
Bleh: JohnxVriska
Better: John/Vriska
Best: John x Vriska
The whole "top/bottom" thing makes sense, but I'd never heard of it before reading these comments. I tend to ship pairings as couples and not just for the porn, so it feels a little weird to use it that way for me, but whatever works, I guess. If I'm listing pairings I tend to alphabetize the names so as not to be giving an indication as to who I think is "better" or "in charge" but perhaps one of the reasons I do this is that the majority of my ships are het.
