I've always associated the use of "x" for pairings to anime fandoms (especially the ones from a few years ago) too. I'm not sure if it's because my first major anime fandom and its related slash pairings was Gundam Wing, where it was used almost exclusively, but I'm pretty sure I'd seen it applied to every single anime pairing I'd met before (and after) as well. I never saw "/" used until I joined my first western fandom (HP), and even if nowadays / seems to be the most used overall, I still see this difference. This is why using x when referring to pairings from non-anime fandoms automatically feels kinda weeaboo-ish to me (unless it's tumblr, where it's impossible to use / in tags).
