But you can't help it

Except you can...?

Also: looking up information on someone you crush on is not that big a deal to me (unless they've made efforts to keep it sealed away); however, acting on that information is where it crosses the line imo. Programming his number into your phone seems a little sketchy - what if you dialed it by mistake? What if he called you and you lost your shit and revealed that you knew it was him because his number was already in your phone? What if he found out some other way?

When I said "you can't help it", I meant that as human beings with weaknesses and a very strong curiousity about certain things. Of course I can help it - if I listened to my moral code. In this case, I made a decision NOT to.

Having his number, along with his address, are the only connections I have allowed myself to have with him, because I need them. I don't want to do anything with them because being a stalker is not the relationship I want with him. I won't accidently dial him because I'm one of those weirdos who still dials numbers from memory. He doesn't have my number. If he ever gives me his number, then I will immediately pretend to add it to my contacts, and I'll feel so much better for having it 'legally'. If I ever let it slip that I've had his number for a couple of years now or I dialed him accidently, I will tell him the truth - that I was googling a local softball league and found his cell number on one of the home pages for coaches. It was a public page, so I don't think it's underhanded that I have it. And I told him a while ago that I "accidently" found him on that home page - I made it sound like a "wow, what a coincidence, huh!?" kind of thing. So while it's shady to have, I think I'm on the right side of the line of sketchiness.

That assumes you'll never butt-dial him or accidentally dial him from your phone bouncing around in your purse/bag/backpack/whatever from your contacts list...

I'm one of those weirdos who still dials numbers from memory.

I used to do that...I had 20+ numbers memorized at a given time...

Anyway, at least it seems you have a clear head and not bad intentions. *shrug* The only thing that really bothered me about your first comment was the "I can't help it" part but apparently that's not what you really meant...

I'm realizing, more and more, that you're actually kind of an idiot.

An anonymous person on the Internet thinks I'm an idiot. (That's totally the first time that's happened!) Guess I better totally change all my opinions and my way of thinking. My life will never be the same. Thank you for your constructive feedback, anon ♥

Just so we're clear with all the anonys bouncing around, I'm the anony you commented to originally but NOT the anony who called you an idiot. I actually think you make sense, and at least you don't think I'm a complete loon like the others downthread. *sigh*

*shrug* I do think what you did was a bit sketchy, honestly. I just didn't think it was as extreme as some people made it out to be. The main reason I commented in the first place was, again, the whole "I can't help it" thing and I do agree that that can be used to justify awful things and is a dangerous way to be thinking about something.

Then again I've never been stalked or stalked anyone, so I don't have any firsthand experience with this sort of thing.

Now that I think about it, if a person (especially a guy - I'm a girl) found my address through some underhanded means - especially if they paid for it - I would find that really creepy and probably try to avoid that person. If, otoh, they found it through a directory or something, that wouldn't really bother me...but I guess those are very different things.
