And that's a bad thing because....? If a blog is dedicated to popularizing and giving more exposure to other people's good fanworks, that is contributing something. Kinda like how word-of-mouth and publicity and marketing contribute to the media industry, and how rec lists and archives and reviews contribute to fandom?

+1

I've discovered lots of amazing artists through tumblr fanart blogs. As long as whoever is running the blog gives credit, they're basically giving free advertising to those artists.

DA
I would agree if more people included the source of whatever they're sharing. Since most never do, I can't think of it as a good thing.

Yeah, I agree, I don't reblog to gain myself followers, I reblog to share some person's awesome content with the followers that I have, even though I don't have many. People deserve recognition for hard work, or even for silly jokes that make people smile.

I have to partially agree with the anon above, it WOULD be awesome if people on tumblr always sourced the original artist/writers, but it doesn't always happen. Tumblr has probably caused the biggest surge of non sourced art I've ever seen.

A lot of people do source and then it's definitely a great way to discover new artists, but a lot of people don't even go to the original source even when it is cited.

For instance something I did got really popular, it was not a reblog but a repost, which I am fine with as long as I am cited as the source (and I was) but people still ending up following the person who made that post, and not me.

The person who made that post even had to make a whole new post just to say, "Yeah, it's nice being followed but I didn't create that."
