I think it's a fairly aggravating thing people do in all sorts of fandoms. "You liked the movie? It was shit! Read the book for a REAL experience." Yeah, but well, I'm not interested in reading the book. I'm just not. Leave me alone.

Also, it's been many years since I last read DNAngel and saw the anime, but I'm pretty sure I remember liking the anime more for some reason or other. (Or maybe I just didn't think the manga was all amazing like others do.)

Yeah, I don't think this is a DNAngel specific gripe, sadly.

Though the only time I would ever be all, "READ THE BOOOOOK." would be with John Carpenter's Vampires, because that movie made me so sad inside. I mean, they killed off everyone in the book except the main character in the first five minutes, which pretty much made it impossible to do much with the rest of the book afterwards. :/

OP

I like some things about the anime. Like...the fact that it actually has an ending. That helps.

But yeah, it's not just a D.N.Angel thing. I've seen it in other fandoms. This is just the specific one that made me think of it this time.

So much this. There have been plenty of times where I watched a movie of a book (for example, The Golden Compass) without reading the book and I actually really enjoyed the movie, but then I would hear people say, 'Oh, they butchered it so much', 'Ugh it was horrible', 'I couldn't stand it', etc. etc. They had, of course, read the book first.

In my experience, reading the book first will lead to being disappointed when a movie adaptation comes out, because there will be things missing from the books and you will be constantly focusing on the differences between movie and book. And honestly? I want to watch those movies that disappointed book fans anyway, because I know I'll enjoy them more without having read the book. I won't be thinking about the book, I will be just... watching and enjoying the movie for what it is. I'll read the books, yes, but a) only if I want to, and b) after watching the movie. If they're so much better than the movie, I'm sure I'll enjoy them. And this way, I can enjoy both book and movie. It's a double win for me.
