I think it's a fairly aggravating thing people do in all sorts of fandoms. "You liked the movie? It was shit! Read the book for a REAL experience." Yeah, but well, I'm not interested in reading the book. I'm just not. Leave me alone.

Also, it's been many years since I last read DNAngel and saw the anime, but I'm pretty sure I remember liking the anime more for some reason or other. (Or maybe I just didn't think the manga was all amazing like others do.)

Yeah, I don't think this is a DNAngel specific gripe, sadly.

Though the only time I would ever be all, "READ THE BOOOOOK." would be with John Carpenter's Vampires, because that movie made me so sad inside. I mean, they killed off everyone in the book except the main character in the first five minutes, which pretty much made it impossible to do much with the rest of the book afterwards. :/

I like some things about the anime. Like...the fact that it actually has an ending. That helps.

But yeah, it's not just a D.N.Angel thing. I've seen it in other fandoms. This is just the specific one that made me think of it this time.

So much this. There have been plenty of times where I watched a movie of a book (for example, The Golden Compass) without reading the book and I actually really enjoyed the movie, but then I would hear people say, 'Oh, they butchered it so much', 'Ugh it was horrible', 'I couldn't stand it', etc. etc. They had, of course, read the book first.

In my experience, reading the book first will lead to being disappointed when a movie adaptation comes out, because there will be things missing from the books and you will be constantly focusing on the differences between movie and book. And honestly? I want to watch those movies that disappointed book fans anyway, because I know I'll enjoy them more without having read the book. I won't be thinking about the book, I will be just... watching and enjoying the movie for what it is. I'll read the books, yes, but a) only if I want to, and b) after watching the movie. If they're so much better than the movie, I'm sure I'll enjoy them. And this way, I can enjoy both book and movie. It's a double win for me.

Yes, I agree that saying 'You liked the show/movie/book? The show/movie/book it was based on/based on it is sooooo much better!' is pretty shitty...which is why it's generally just better to say 'I didn't really like it - but I really liked the the book/movie/show! Have you tried it?'

That said...What you did at the end of your secret was also pretty pushy OP.

OP

UGH I know, I'm sorry. I just reread it and cringed. I'm not sure what I was thinking when I added that. Way to be a hypocrite, self.

[personal profile] isa_lyxces 2012-09-29 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I have. Unfortunately, it's on hiatus. Again. Maybe people like the anime, cause it actually has something like closure? I mean, I really like the manga, but still.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
Not just hiatus; it's done -- not finished, just DONE, because apparently Sugisaki was told by her editors to essentially give it up.

She's naturally starting TWO new projects now.

I love her art and her storylines, but like hell am I letting her leave me high and dry again. Fuck that, I'll wait til she actually finishes a series.

And to make this relevant: Sorry, OP, but I would've been one of those people telling everyone to go read the manga because it is infinitely better than the anime. It's a natural reaction, wanting to get more people into the best parts of your fandom, and even the best adaptations are still adaptations, and not everyone may realize there's other source material out there with potentially different content, let alone BETTER content.

One thing I will say though: hey, at least the anime had a reasonable ending point :|

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 04:21 am (UTC)(link)
I thought that she was going to (hopefully) continue it later, since she called it "part one"? Maybe in a different magazine, like what happened with Trigun.

...I'll be a little upset if she doesn't, anyway. I'm definitely not getting into any of her other series unless they're finished, that's for sure.

And yeah, I understand wanting people to try the original, too! My favorite manga has an anime adaptation that is...ehhh, so I've admittedly been too pushy about people reading the manga for that in the past, too. I'm just realizing that there's better ways to do it than bashing the anime people like...

...And yeah, the anime had an ending, so points for that.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know, there's been plenty of times when I've gotten into a fandom, and seen everyone saying "This version is the best" or "this series is the best" and being really enthusiastic about it and maybe dismissive about other parts of the fandom, and that generally does inspire me to check out the shit that they're hype about.

Like, if I were into the dnangel anime the comments depicted would make me much more likely to read the manga

i don't know

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 04:23 am (UTC)(link)
yeah, really? I hope so...I mean, I do really like the manga and want people to read it obviously considering my dumb, also-pushy message at the end there. I'm sure it's well-meaning and I really like the people that made that post, I just get worried that it'll seem like they're saying "Well, you're WRONG for liking that version, you should like THIS version!"

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 01:30 am (UTC)(link)
you would have a point if anime adaptations of good ongoing manga weren't almost universally mediocre to fucking awful. this is pretty much a fact anime and manga fans have accepted at this point, same with anime to manga adaptations.

especially when they stay true to the manga until the point where they've caught up, and then it's really obvious where the completely different anime ending comes in.

"the manga is better" is a really valid thing to say in circumstances like that. D.N.Angel is one of those circumstances.

OP

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
I know it's a valid thing to say. Most of the manga I enjoy I much prefer over the anime versions. I'm just worried that people bashing something another person enjoys is a great way to scare them off. I think we can say "Have you tried the manga? It fleshes out the characters much more and goes more into [blank]" without going "this thing that you like is horrible."

I remember reading DNAngel! Really liked the story, bought the first two books at the very end of junior high school.

That was over eight years ago. My patience has long since worn thin. It was a good story, but it wasn't THAT good.

(However, though I hated the anime for all the changes it made, I can understand preferring the version that actually had an ending.)

As for people telling fans that some version of a story is better than another - eh, it can go either way. If you're pushy about it, they're not going to react well, but if you sell it right, they might be interested. Also, they might just not be invested enough to care.

But if we're on the topic of anime that was better in written form... go read Howl's Moving Castle. I liked the movie well enough, but man, I read the book and grieved for the story Miyazaki could have told but didn't.

Mmmm, yeah, shitty behavior is shitty.

I liked the Manga but if I recall the longer it got the less I... cared? The plot just never game me closure and new questions all the time. Ugh, also the hiatus that turned into "nope, it's done." That sucks.

For those reasons alone I could never recommend the manga to a friend. I've never seen the anime so I'm not even going to try to compare them.
