I think the problem goes back to racist and ignorant belief that some Americans and many, many non-Americans have that Americans come in two flavors; white and black. And even then, there are certain white ethnic groups that are seen as more American than others. English, Irish, Italian, Scottish are seen as American. Names like Smith, Costello, Murphy and Stewart, people have no problem believing that they American. For some reason, Dutch, Slavic and Scandinavian names are always surprising to non-Americans. Even when you tell them that states like Michigan, Illinois and Ohio are filled to the brim with them.

For example, I remember watching an Australian quiz show called Spicks and Specs, where they were trying to figure out who Andreas Cornelis van Kuijk was. One of the answers they had to choose from was Elvis' manager. To which one of the Australian panel members dismissed that answer because to him van Kuijk didn't sound like "an American name." Turns out it was Elvis' manager aka The Colonel.

Now to go back, there are so many people who when they think American they never envision anyone Asian despite the fact that there are tens of millions Asians in America. And have so for generations. Sulu for example is a Californian. Now if you really want to blow their minds, show them someone an Amer-Asian from the South. To some this is like showing them a leprechaun wrapped in a unicorn coat. They can't believe they're real.

I know it's silly, if you think about it. The US is an immigrant country. Of course we are going to have people from around the world. All people. But still, people don't believe it or forget it. (Personally, I blame it on the lack of diversity in movies and TV. If all you see is a sea of white and black faces with surnames like Jones and Jackson, that's all you are going to think exist in the US.)

>sea of white faces
Fix'd that for you.

lolno. Asians might have less representation in media (largely due to yellowfacing), but let's not pretend there's a lot of black people on TV, especially on Star Trek where Uhura was the only black character on there and one of the handful in media back then.

Shit, America is just coming around that there are different ethnicities and nationalities of black Americans too. Shit, sometimes they forget not all black people grew up in a inner-city ghetto and the ones who weren't from the ghetto aren't kids of rappers or athletes.

Yes, whites outnumber blacks on television by a staggering amount. But the truth is, when an American show wants to be diverse, what ethnic group usually fills the "token" slot? African Americans. More so than Latin Americans, Asians, Arabs, Persians and South East Asians. What's worse is that when other ethnic groups do get cast in those very rare roles, most times, despite the fact the actor may be American and have only an American accent, they will make that American actor "play up" his/her ethnicity. (Usually for laughs.) See Two Broke Girls for example.

OH MY GOD A RACIST SECRET THAT ISN'T ABOUT BLACK PEOPLE

QUICK, CALL THE INTERNET

>person makes a wrong statement about representation of black people in media and correct them
>implying that it's trying to make the secret about black people

+100 to all of this - particularly the bit about people's minds being blown over Amer-Asians from the South. I live in a southern city that's actually has a large Vietnamese population, and people are always shocked when they find out. -shrugs-

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 03:33 am (UTC)(link)
I live in the South and we have a large Asian population, among them Filipinos, Chinese, Indians, and various Middle Eastern groups. The South is much less racially homogenous than the Midwest or New England, but we're always billed as monolingual whites. People in general are fucking stupid.

Agreed. I live in the belly of North Carolina and we have a large North African/Arab Muslim population. (The majority are from Sudan.) It's not uncommon to walk into Wal-mart and see women dressed jilbabs and hijabs. And this is the middle of Bible Belt Country.

I thought this was about Asians in South America. Like Brazil. There's a decent population there too!

The thread is about the US and the diversity people in it because of the American character, Sulu, not being described as being written as American because he is of Asian descent. What gave you any idea it was about South America?

Re: :(

Anon was probably a non-native English speaker and saw "Amer-Asians from the South" and assumed it meant South Americans. There's a lot of contention, especially among Latin Americans, that Americans are referred to by the term. This has led to the calque "USians", which I personally despise.

Then wouldn't it be more, "Amer-Asians from South" or "Amer-Asians from South America" rather than "the South?" When is South American ever referred to as "the South America." As if there is more than one South America.

And, again, when a thread is nothing about US, American characters and the diversity of Yankees, themselves, I don't get how you can make that mistake. Like right of the blue someone is going to make a wrong turn at Albuquerque.

And, yeah, I hate, hate, HATE being called "USians." I'd rather be called a "Yankee" and I'm Southern.

The difference I guess between having 'white people' and 'Asian people'is that here is no unified language that all Asians speak, so it should not be a problem if he spoke Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Russian, Thai, etc.
Even Asian Americans, many of them may have learnt English first but it doesn't mean they don't speak the language/dialect from where they immigrated from.

What...? Wait, what? Look, there's no unified language among "white people" either. Try getting away with speaking Russian in Belgium and see how far that gets you.

YES. All of this.

Now if you really want to blow their minds, show them someone an Amer-Asian from the South. To some this is like showing them a leprechaun wrapped in a unicorn coat. They can't believe they're real.

I have to admit to this day when I hear about people of Asian descent raised in, say, small-town Alabama, or Jamaica, or Scotland (like that Starburst commercial), with all the associated languages and cultures, I have to force-reset the incredulous mindset the media has locked into my head.

totally a csb, but here in big-city Alabama I was at a hibatchi place the other day, and a nice and very blond lady came in with her teenage asian daughter--I guess she could have been mixed, but she looked fully ethnic asian. Anyway, that kid had the thickest Southern drawl I had heard in a long time, just like her momma, whether adopted or otherwise. It was so cute. XD
