(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)"I was highly amused when an American told me he wanted to be more worldly by leaning languages and listed Irish as one of them. I know there's a few words that's different, but it still sounded funny.
EDIT: Okay so he probably meant Irish Gaelic, but then say Irish Gaelic. You'd be surprised by how little I know about languages so it helps to be specific. ;)"
I've had no opinion up until now, but oh WOW.
It's like...a perfect turnaround. She thinks it's funny Americans are so uneducated about different cultures, to the point of mistaking a different dialect as a different language--when, in reality, she was so uneducated she didn't know that Irish was actually a language. She tries to save face, but calling the language plain "Irish" is proper. You'd have to WANT to see the person you're speaking to as an idiot to think that they must have meant the "English language as spoken by Irishman" instead of "Irish Gaelic" when one says they're trying to learn "Irish", when speaking to you in English.
I mean, we she believes she represents a typical Dane, why would she make a joke about Americans not knowing much about languages, when she freely admits she doesn't?

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)Although, I think most Americans know that Irish Gaelic exist considering the history of the Irish settlers in America, IMO.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 02:03 am (UTC)(link)As an American, I'm not going to say we're highly culturally aware BUT we're pretty good about other English dialects. Why? Because speakers of those dialects live in the US or feature in popular TV shows or movies. If monolingual English speakers can understand it, it's English. The proper English name for the English spoken in Ireland is Hiberno-English, Irish English, or just English. You can't say "Irish" and mean anything but Irish Gaelic.

(Anonymous) 2012-09-30 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)but then again everything about humon is skeevy as fuck

You know critics are going overboard when they cry "skeevy racial implications!" at the natural response of many Caucasian people's skin to extended sun exposure :/
ETA: okay, misremembered slightly -- it was a spray tan, not a natural one. Still not a racial thing, is my point.

One, if he turned brown due to a tan... why is he still brown? A tan doesn't last 4 years.
Two: While yes, caucasian people tends to tan, in my experience the only people who use that as a punchline for a comicstrip... tend to be pretty racist themselves and apologize later because 'it was just a tan joke'...
Answer to your ETA: Funny, that strip was not when she gave the ORIGINAL reason for America turning brown. I had to hunt the link but here it is Reality Hits. Also, it was done in 2009, way before she introduces Sister America.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-04 05:23 am (UTC)(link)It seems to be a bit of a stretch to say that she's creating a stereotype of a stereotype, and I'm pretty sure her notes on the comics are not ironic.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 02:09 am (UTC)(link)I mean, this would be like me writing a comic making fun of Finland not knowing Swedish is a real language and being scared that the German population is wildly increasing. She has no idea what she's talking about.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 07:20 pm (UTC)(link)The thing is that humon's America obviously is an American stereotype. I live in Germany and one common joke about Americans is that they're ignorant and proud of it.
It doesn't matter if real Americans do this or that, HER America is a stereotype and so he will behave according to this.
Her comics are nothing but stereotypes, most of them negative.
I wouldn't even care for them if she wouldn't constantly state that everything she draws is truth and has RL reasons.
After all those years I prefer to think of her as an epic troll. I can handle her shit better that way.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 07:37 pm (UTC)(link)Europeans shit on the US all the time, often hypocritically, but humon takes it to an extreme. The US doesn't even care enough about Scandinavia to have any real stereotypes about them (except for the women being hot, the furniture being impossible, and the people speaking with double stress), so constantly putting America in her comics is just poking fun to be poking fun.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 07:10 am (UTC)(link)Now; one would be forgiven for modifying that a little: for a while there were some dumb shits on the fringes whining about how much Spanish is spoken in America. So it would be more accurate for America to be bitching about how "we speak English in America!" but it still wouldn't be accurate to say that everyone in America feels the same way. They lost the argument about press one for English, after all.
no subject
(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 10:40 am (UTC)(link)But the LOUDER part of the country, although not the larger one, is all "WE SPEAK AMERICAN!" There is an ever-growing and frightening movement to make English the official language of the US, thereby meaning that interpreters for ANY language, Spanish included, would be unnecessary. It would destroy our boarders and our culture to do so, but the movement is there and growing.
So, yeah. There is a vocal, and not small, group of people in the government and in the general populace who are going "SPANISH ISN'T A REAL LANGUAGE HERE IN AMERICA". Whereas the majority who see the need are much quieter and much more sane. And guess which faction gets the coverage overseas?
