I will never understand this perspective. How spineless do you have to be to let *fandom* ruin something you've never seen?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-01 11:02 pm (UTC)(link)
And why/how can't you just avoid a fandom you're not a part of? Do they ambush you on the street or privately message you?

OP is probably just one of those people who can't enjoy something unless a group is there to tell her* how to feel about it. And if she doesn't like the group that's just it for the show.

* totally assuming; maybe wrong.

I think it's the opposite actually. If too many people tell OP to like something, they start getting frustrated out of anti-conformist rebellion.

Yeah, this. Why are you hanging out in a fandom you hate, for a show you don't watch?

it's kinda hard to avoid things like Teen Wolf, Sherlock, Avengers. possible, but not easy
terabient: Anime-styled profile pic that is kinda, sorta like me (Default)

It can be hard to avoid the mega fandoms on tumblr, though. I have 'Teen Wolf' tumblr savior'd, but a fair amount Teen Wolf posts slip through because people aren't consistent with their tags/don't tag reblogs. Or in very rare cases, will deliberately not tag posts with tags they suspect will be blocked because it's dealing with an ~important issue~ (I've only had this happen twice, and only once was it TW related, but wow that was all kinds of silly.)

I haven't unfollowed any of the blogs that tag poorly because I like 95% of the other stuff they post and seeing a gif set or shipping rant or w/e every now and then doesn't bother me, but I can see where someone else might get tired of it.

^^This!

If I avoided every show/movie/book/etc... with a fucked up fandom, cripes - I wouldn't get to enjoy anything! And heck, some of the crazy of fandom has incited enough intrigue that I've checked out a show/movie/book/etc. simply because of it (Teen Wolf, I'm looking at you!)

It is entirely possible to enjoy something WITHOUT being involved in the 'worst' parts of fandom (or being involved in fandom at all, for that matter; but I assume from the OP's secret that they considering being a part of fandom essential to being a fan of something).
