This guy I used to know in school wanted to friend me on facebook. I never really liked him and have no interest in talking to him, so I ignored his request. And because I read The Gift of Fear and I'm following a creepy vibe I get off him, I blocked him too.

And now I'm the tiniest but paranoid about what he'll do when he sees I've blocked him. I don't go to that school anymore, but that fairly recent secret about discovering RL stuff about minor celebrities online has made me worry about what could be found on me online. Can anyone give me tips on how to cyber stalk myself to see what can be found? I don't want my address or phone number anywhere.

Most obviously is to Google search your full name. With the results that show, you could maybe contact the webmaster to remove your info. Set a Google Alert for your name, though , if it's common, it could be a hassle.

I just did that and luckily I don't seem to pop up except for facebook, which is heavily secured. I'll do the google alert thing though, that's a good idea! Thanks.

Oh, btw I just found out that all the photos in your "cover" album can be viewed by people you haven't friended. Not just the one currently being used as a profile pic. Everyone but me probably already knew that but jic!

Mine's secured. I found out the hard way -- I'm friends with a teenage relative, and one of their friends must have followed some comment I left to my page, then PMd me this really nasty email about how ugly and disgusting I am, from a picture in my cover photo album. I was actually vaguely amused that some bratty-ass teen was apparently trying to facebook me to suicide or something. I really badly wanted to write back telling her exactly what happens to people who fuck with adults who are not afraid of them, but I just reported her and then set my photos in that album to friends-only.

Looks like I'm mostly safe (knock on wood) but I signed up to be alerted in case the site actually can find my email and phone number, the way they say it can.

Here's something everyone should do.

Go to spokeo.com, and look up your name and state. You'd be amazed at what kind of shit you can find. Everything from phone numbers, to your relatives, to street view on your house. Past properties you've lived in.

I'm serious. Everyone, go do it now.

Keep in mind all of that info is publicly available info in other locations - it's just collected in one place that someone could look for.

Okay, this was too creepy. They have a picture of my house!

But they think I'm male, so it's not all accurate.

I doubt if that matters if someone who knows you enough to look for your name and general area. They probably know your gender too.

I've done this before on another site, and it really creeps me out how easy it is to find this sort of information. What I really want to know is if they honestly have my email addresses (and do they have ALL of them or just a couple), and if so HOW THE HELL DID THEY FIND THEM? (But...I don't want to know enough to pay for it, and I doubt anyone else cares enough to pay for that information either, so that's comforting at least. ...Still, how can they just sell your information? That's all kinds of wrong.)

I guess there's no way to get your information off these sites, right? Because there are god knows how many of them, and it seems futile. :/

Look at my comment to the person above, that's how you remove yourself from spokeo. I'm sure there's similar procedures for other sites. I got myself removed from spokeo a few years back and haven't seen myself appear in it since.

I've heard that if you've taken out any kind of loan, you can end up in the database that gets used. Car insurance, mortgages, owning a business, pretty much anything like that.

Forgive my annoyance, but it pisses me off when USians think everyone on the web is from the US.

Um, not OP but it's not always the case of assuming everyone is U.S. I know sometimes I don't always know when a website doesn't work outside of the U.S. The other day I discovered Hulu won't play for people in Canada. Didn't know that.

I'm not even sure how I would check that from inside the U.S.?
