Here's something everyone should do.

Go to spokeo.com, and look up your name and state. You'd be amazed at what kind of shit you can find. Everything from phone numbers, to your relatives, to street view on your house. Past properties you've lived in.

I'm serious. Everyone, go do it now.

Holy shit HOLY SHIT! HOW DO I GET MY INFO OFF THAT SITE?

Copied from the spokeo website:

How do I opt out of Spokeo/remove my listing?

Spokeo respects your privacy interests, and you can easily opt out of Spokeo’s public search if desired. Please note that the information aggregated by Spokeo is publicly available, opting out of Spokeo does not remove the information from its original sources. You can remove the search results derived from performing any Name Search, Reverse Phone Search, Reverse Email Search and Username Search here.

To remove your Name/Phone/Email/UsernameListing(s):

1. Locate the individual listing to remove (for name listings, please select the state, city, then exact profile match)
2. Copy the URL (the URL can be found on the top of your browser and should look something like “http://www.spokeo.com/search?q=Smith%20Sample#Sample:1219812367″)
3. Go to www.spokeo.com/privacy
4. Paste the URL
5. Provide your email address (this acts as a verification process for the confirmation to be sent to your Inbox) and Captcha Code (Image Verification Code)
6. Check your Inbox for the confirmation email, and click on the link on the bottom to complete the removal process.
7. The directory listing will become flagged and will be removed within 1 business day.

I assume you can't get someone else's info removed on their behalf?

Re: How Do I Background Check Myself?

[personal profile] khronos_keeper 2012-10-05 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
You can! I've taken my mom, dad, both sisters, and several in laws off the site. You don't need to prove you are the person you want removed, you just have to provide the url you want taken down.

NA

Keep in mind all of that info is publicly available info in other locations - it's just collected in one place that someone could look for.

Okay, this was too creepy. They have a picture of my house!

But they think I'm male, so it's not all accurate.

I doubt if that matters if someone who knows you enough to look for your name and general area. They probably know your gender too.

I've done this before on another site, and it really creeps me out how easy it is to find this sort of information. What I really want to know is if they honestly have my email addresses (and do they have ALL of them or just a couple), and if so HOW THE HELL DID THEY FIND THEM? (But...I don't want to know enough to pay for it, and I doubt anyone else cares enough to pay for that information either, so that's comforting at least. ...Still, how can they just sell your information? That's all kinds of wrong.)

I guess there's no way to get your information off these sites, right? Because there are god knows how many of them, and it seems futile. :/

Look at my comment to the person above, that's how you remove yourself from spokeo. I'm sure there's similar procedures for other sites. I got myself removed from spokeo a few years back and haven't seen myself appear in it since.

I've heard that if you've taken out any kind of loan, you can end up in the database that gets used. Car insurance, mortgages, owning a business, pretty much anything like that.

Sorry, I typed my comment before you responded but posted after. Thanks for the step by step guide! (Even if it was on the site. Doh!) I'm glad it seemed to work for you!

Hmm, that's crafty. Didn't realize that! Not cool, but...not much you can do about it either, I guess.

NP! Well, you can at least take yourself and anyone you know off their radar. I've taken my whole family off before.

Yea, that is true! I'm definitely going to take my family off and see if there are any similar sites where I can do the same. Thanks for the heads up! (Never would've thought to do this on my own, seeing as I missed the removal directions. >.>)

Ha. I'm not there but other people in my house are.

God, we live in a creepy age.

...oh wow, I looked up my grandmother and she's listed as being 20 years younger and living at the house we lived in when I was a baby. That's...actually kind of cute?

That site has two of me. Well, I'm not 100% sure the second one is also me, there could be someone else with my name living where I lived a few years ago...

Nope, that's you. It can catalogue people at different residences that they've lived at over the years.

"everyone should do"

Forgive my annoyance, but it pisses me off when USians think everyone on the web is from the US.

Re: How Do I Background Check Myself?

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-10-06 05:18 am (UTC)(link)
Um, not OP but it's not always the case of assuming everyone is U.S. I know sometimes I don't always know when a website doesn't work outside of the U.S. The other day I discovered Hulu won't play for people in Canada. Didn't know that.

I'm not even sure how I would check that from inside the U.S.?

Sorry if I've ever linked anyone to something limited to the USA.

Re: How Do I Background Check Myself?

[personal profile] loki 2012-10-06 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
It's right there on the front page, as well as in the search results. It's glaringly obvious to anyone that the site is only for the US. But so many US people don't notice, unlike people from other countries who sort of have to learn to notice, you know?

My (mild) frustration is reasonable, and derived from years of observation. I share it with many, but I usually keep quiet because whatever. I just had to say something then.

Re: How Do I Background Check Myself?

[personal profile] anonymouslyyours 2012-10-06 05:48 am (UTC)(link)
Oh, I didn't check this particular site out. I didn't know it said anything like that on the first page.

I understand where you're coming from a little better now. On initial read I thought you meant most people from the U.S. assume everyone with an internet connection are in the U.S. and link accordingly. Not that some of us tend to be ignorant about site access for other countries.

I completely understand your frustration is reasonable, wasn't trying to say it wasn't. :( Just felt a little embarrassed as someone who has been guilty of oblivious linkage and I wanted to let you know most of us don't mean to imply the internet is only in the U.S. and apologize?

And I really am sorry. Still kind of embarrassed about my link snafu I made in a previous F!S post.

I don't know if you, or anyone else reading this thread, know of a way to check what countries a website can be accessed from?

I've been on there before, but I think I forget how bad it was. What the fuck is my grandma's current address and phone number doing on there?! A phone book is one thing, but she doesn't need to be online where the pool of freaks widens exponentially! Jesus.
