tbh I like it too. It's a fun dynamic between total opposites and it can go anywhere on the sliding scale from fluffy to dark and/or kinky as hell. So yeah, it's a slash party. But really guys, in terms of slashability of popular non-canon pairings, I can think of a ton of ships that had much more frequent and intense canon interaction, even ones where everybody knew about it and the actors thought it was funny and the creators wink-winked about it, and none of them have become canon, not ever. Like, I think there's a really big difference between the way fangirls squee over a slash pairing -- THEY WOULD BE SO PERFECT FOR EACH OTHER OMG -- and the way that (slash-positive) actors, writers, producers, and execs interpret our squee, which is more like: "Well this is cute and fun and harmless!" So when they nod and play along, we get our hopes up, but I think really they're mostly expecting it to be an unspoken understanding that none of it is serious.
The creator has not once said that he will make Sterek canon. He's thrown little winks out to the audience, like, oh who knows where this could go? but then in the same breath he talks about what territory he wants to explore with Stiles/Lydia in S3, or mentions that one thing he's learned about TV is that once you've satisfied the audience's desire, the story is over. To me this is not optimistic stuff.
Also, I think mostly once a writer has an idea written into a character, it's hard to write it out or change it based on audience whim. I know they've purposefully hinted that Stiles is bi, but so far his main romantic connection is to Lydia. Even if they did decide to go for canon Sterek, they'd have to find a way to wrap up that storyline, as to not disrespect the storytelling so far. As for Derek, he's been sexualized solely in a heterosexual context. He canonically slept with Kate; the two male wolves he turned, he turned off-screen, but when he turned Erica, it was played for eroticism -- he was running his hands up her legs and yanking her down the stretcher; he ad Erica kissed later. These are the kind of character preconception -- that errbody straight and destined for straight romance unless immediately and firmly established to be otherwise -- that writers will be reluctant to change. And even if they weren't, who says MTV would go for it?
So yeah, sorry. I think the Sterek = canon stuff is way overblown. I mean, the fact that the creator is saying HEY WHO KNOWS is super cool, because that's surely the closest any slash ship has ever gotten. But put big money down on this.

His main romantic interest is in Lydia; "connection" implies that she's interested back, which really doesn't seem to be the case. And, sure, they should wrap up Stiles's unrequited love storyline, regardless of whether he gets involved with anyone else, but I don't see why that should be considered a difficult task. Unless Davis plans to draw out the triangle indefinitely, then at some point in the show, Lydia will fall out of love with Jackson and/or Stiles will fall out of love with Lydia and/or one of those three characters will die (or die again, in Jackson's case). Any or all of those seem to me like things that could reasonably occur...though, as someone who likes all three characters, I'm really hoping that the last item doesn't happen.

Not the connotation I intended, but okay, I'll go with "interest" if that works better. And no, wrapping it up wouldn't be difficult, but do they want to? I don't know how far these writers plan ahead, but if I had worked out a few years of plot that included Styles/Lydia, I think I'd be reluctant to discard it, and I could understand the writers' choice to keep heading in the original direction if that is what they choose to do.
I'm not arguing it's impossible -- however fandom seems way too convinced it's inevitable.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 02:29 pm (UTC)(link)The casual way the show portrays homosexuality as normal is totally wonderful and I think that is a sign that the showrunners at least wouldn't reject the idea of making it canon out of their own homophobia.
Jeff Davis, Teen Wolf's show creator, executive producer, and head writer, is gay himself, so I truly hope he wouldn't reject the idea out of his own homophobia. (I didn't mention his being gay as a point in Sterek's favor before because there are too many counterexamples like Sherlock, which Mark Gatiss's involvement hasn't prevented from being a hot mess as far as depiction of queer characters is concerned. But I don't think that's due to Gatiss's internalized homophobia, but rather to other tl;dr reasons, and I'm pretty sure the same is/would be true of Davis, if he indeed never comes through with a fully-fledged queer relationship on Teen Wolf.)
Re: Stiles/Lydia. I'm pushing back extra hard on this idea because I'm annoyed and a bit creeped out by the prevalence of "You Belong with Me"-type relationship dynamics in popular media. I've seen some people argue that Stiles's sense of entitlement regarding Lydia is borderline abusive, which I disagree with. I'd say the way he talks about and acts towards her is more one part easily seen through bravado, one part humorous self-deprecation, and one part regular teenaged self-centeredness. But I really don't want to see his expectations facilely validated by the show. If they do end up together, I'd only want it to be after huge amounts of character growth for both Stiles and Lydia, and after Stiles had had a relationship with someone else and Lydia herself had had at least one post-Jackson relationship (real relationships, not I'm-dating-you-to-try-to-forget-my-actual-true-love relationships), and after the show had adequately demonstrated why Lydia would become interested in Stiles despite happily ignoring him for years. All of which, frankly, I don't trust Davis and the other Teen Wolf writers to do at all well, so I'm hoping they sidestep the entire issue and have Stiles get over his crush.

Just a suggestion

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)Oh, man, if they actually wrote a serious poly relationship onto Teen Wolf (or really any mainstream media show), I don't think my joy could be textually rendered. I'm more of a Danny\Jackson/Lydia or a Jackson\Lydia/Allison shipper than I am a fan of Stiles/Jackson/Lydia, but I wouldn't even care; representation matters a lot more to me than shipping preferences. I mean, it's never going to happen. :-( But if it did, it would be epic.
