Can someone please explain to me why people actually think Sterek is going to be canon? Look, I'm not a super-hardcore fan so maybe I missed some little detail that implies canonicity, but seriously, WHAT. WHY. How does this ship have canon merit?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-05 10:50 pm (UTC)(link)
The comment above you explains it (and debunks it) perfectly.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-05 11:00 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it started out as wishful thinking and then creators/writers/actors didn't shoot it down or ignore it and now it's grown into this monster. Mostly, it's people hiding behind MORE LGBTQ CHARACTERS ON TV, when really they just want Sterek. WHICH IS FINE but just fucking say that.

Stiles/Derek is my OTP but I have mixed feelings about it becoming canon. We've all been in fandoms when our ships go canon and somedays, there is no coming back from that. (Spike/Buffy, anyone?) At the same time, I think there is chemistry there (but then again, there is practically canon with everyone on this damn show) and it could be interesting.

Why does it have canon merit? I think because it doesn't directly interfere with canon ships. It involves brooding, dark characters with nice muscles and characters that people adore without shipping them with anyone (Stiles). While I think it has canon merit but solid possibility that creators haven't shut down.

A ship becoming canon is kind of a double-edged sword, isn't it? Everyone has a certain image for how their OTP would be as a couple, and then as the equal and opposite reaction to that, everyone has an interpretation of the couple that they loaaaathe. Think about your OTP. Now think about that one type of fic that makes you roll your eyes and mutter every time it pops up on your flist. NOW IMAGINE THAT TYPE OF FIC BECOMING CANON. Then you'd be crying and wishing that it had stayed the same so you could have kept them as the couple you loved in your head.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-05 11:09 pm (UTC)(link)
It definitely is a double-edged sword and I think a lot of Sterek shippers are new to fandom or perhaps have never been burned by a ship becoming canon.

So yeah. I don't think Derek/Stiles is a crazy notion in canon but I'm wary of it for EXACTLY this reason.

I'm kind of new to TW, so: are the demographics really shifted that firmly into the camp of total fandom newbies? Because if so, it does make sense why there's such widespread faith that they're gilding up the plaque announcing its canon status even as we speak. I'm a veteran of several ships where it seemed like the entire freaking fandom was convinced it was practically canon already and could spontaneously morph into actual canon any day (Remus/Sirius, Mohinder/Sylar, Dean/Castiel), and after a few years of hearing the same arguments for why it's omg so canon you just start going, "Sure, sure." Maybe TW fandom doesn't have a large enough population of that kind of world-weary fan to cool down the general excitability.

SA

are the demographics really shifted that firmly into the camp of total fandom newbies? It's just a personal theory. This is because a) it's on MTV, b) the demographic is geared toward younger people who might not have been around for the discovery of fandom (like Buffy fans, X-Files fans, Harry Potter fans or Star Trek fans, where a lot of us got our start in fandom) and c) the popularity of het-ships like Scott/Allison and Lydia/Jackson.

I think that because the fanbase is young and new to fandom, that's why there is such a rush to defend Stiles as canon and push for it so hard that the 4th Wall is left in the dust. I've been here for a while too (hello there fellow Remus/Sirius oldschooler!) and I think as tempting as the canon label can be, the fears of how it might go down are so over whelming. I think people who have been in fandom a while see the the freedoms of practically canon.

Maybe TW fandom doesn't have a large enough population of that kind of world-weary fan to cool down the general excitability. I don't think so. I think that what happens is that you don't see wold-weary fans joining the conversation. We're like JUST WAIT. LOL. And we live in our own little pocket of fandom that a little less eating up whatever Jeff has to say hook-line-and-sinker. That isn't to say we're better than anybody who thinks Sterek should/could/will be canon. It's just that... we're more cautious possibly.

Your demographics theory makes sense. I can name at least one other big gateway fandom that's currently going strong, but that fandom is Twilight, and I'm not sure that's where you go to learn about having a non-hyperbolic relationship with a text.

I got my start in HP fandom by the way, omg memories <3

That isn't to say we're better than anybody who thinks Sterek should/could/will be canon. It's just that... we're more cautious possibly.

This also makes sense. Hell, I'd love it if it became canon, but like you, I'm not going to hold my breath or bet my mother's life. Anyway, thank you for sharing your ideas with me, you are wise.

Haha, this. I'd rather see that my OTPs became mortal enemies than were coupled together like in some fics I've read.
cloud_riven: Close-up of an open-mouthed piglet! Is it recoiling? Or side-eyeing? Maybe saying, "HEY YOU TWO SHOULD KISS"? Mystery! (eeeeeeehhhhhh)

Man, that's not even "that one type of fic" for me. That's like, basically most of the fic.

which is why i am always happy that source material rarely follows the styles of the fanfiction it gets.
