You are not alone. I loved SGU, and I own them on DVD (the only of the Stargate franchise that I went out and bought, even though SG1 will always be my favorite). I still haven't seen the last two episodes. I've tried twice to have a rewatch of all the episodes and then finally watch the least 2, but I can't bring myself to do it. Once I do, they're over. I thought I was the only one.

It's sad to finish, but the last two episodes bring everything together quite beautifully, imo. But then again, once you've watched them, it's really really over. I would advice you to watch. :)

I never watched SGU, but there are TONS of shows that I have never seen the last episode of because I can't bear it to be over. I also sometimes buy the last book in a series and then don't read it... I've even been known to stop watching movies before the end. Idk, I know that's weird, but I just don't deal well with endings ;_;

I couldn't get past the fact that the two main characters and most of the other characters were simply horrible people. I'm all for gray characters, but when your gray is practically black why exactly am I supposed to care about them? I need to be able to root for the characters, and I couldn't here. I can see why others like it, I just couldn't.

This. I liked a few of the characters, but they were hardly the ones given any sort of focus. I hated how bodyswap sex was never questioned and how no one was given any sort of accountability for their actions.

It really didn't feel like a Stargate series.

I like dark characters but in SGU the unlikeability of the characters really made the series suffer because, especially in the beginning, the series is SO boring. And if your plots aren't interesting enough and your characters aren't likeable, then there's really no reason for the audience to be watching.

I only got through SGU because I watched it on netflix while doing other things. It does get a lot better as it goes but it's still largely boring and it's main draw is the acting talent.

It just made me miss SG-1, I'm glad they never messed with Sg-1 to the point of nonrepair. It was just a fun series.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 10:29 pm (UTC)(link)
It took me a really long time to like this show, and if it hadn't been Stargate I'd probably have given up. But I did warm to it eventually and when it ended I was gutted that there'd be no more (and no resolution, the bastards). I think I would have liked it sooner if Scott wasn't so bloody dull.

[personal profile] archinon 2012-10-07 09:01 am (UTC)(link)
I think I warmed to it so much, that it sorta became my number 1 SG show. WTF?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 10:40 pm (UTC)(link)
Well since you cued it, I hated SGU with the passion of a billion billion billion fiery suns and it was one of the happiest days of my life the day it was canceled. I actually got out a vodka cooler, danced around the house and sang songs of joy! Never has a show deserved to die so much. Never.

That said, if you liked it you should watch that last ep, evidently its' fans say it is really poignant and will give you hope for the future. And there's always fanfic.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Hmm. I liked SGU, but I'm going to have to wank about the vodka cooler. Srsly? Blech.

I hear that it finally started getting really good when it was canceled? IDK. I'm still working my way through SG-1 (I started with SGA), and I'm not sure I'll even want to watch. But there's always fic.

I totally understand not wanting to watch the last episode, though. Not only is it the end of a show you love, but the end of an entire franchise. It hurts to think about.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-06 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
The first half of the first season is hard, but I appreciated the franchise enough that I forced myself through the entire first season and by the end, I loved it. It's definitely a different flavor from SG-1 and SGA, but if you can handle and/or like grittier anti-heroic types (and a very awesome Robert Carlyle), it's well worth the effort. I can respect that some people just didn't like it - it *is* different - but usually I see wank along the lines of, "It was the worst show evaahhhh" which makes me roll my eyes a little. Even I can respect something I don't like (there's a difference, for example, between hating a particular type of food versus saying that a chef sucks because they're cooking a food that you don't happen to like).

Anyway. I think it's worth a once through. :: shrugs ::

Honestly, the way the end of SGA (and by that I mean pretty much season five) and the start of SGU were handled pushed me into mourning for the end of Stargate before more than a few episodes of SGU had aired (and like a lot of Stargate fans, was more than a little relieved that a movie with TPTB involved was never made).

There were a number of actors involved in SGU I would have loved to have watched, but life is too short to watch the bitter geekboys who produced and wrote it play Battlestar Galactica with their paper dolls.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 12:49 am (UTC)(link)
+1 to all of this. I wasn't even mad that SGA got cancelled, I was mad they started to write SGA for crap because they didn't give a shit anymore, I was mad they treated the fans like shit, and I was mad they did all this because they wanted to write for Battlestar Galactica (which honestly, Stargate writers are not good enough to pull it off.)

I gave SGU a chance years later when my bitterness had died down, it had some redeemable qualities but it started off SO boring and the characters are not at all likeable so it's not something I'd ever rewatch. The main thing it has going for it is having some good acting talent.

I have ZERO interest in SGU but I did the same thing with the SG-1 movies. I was sooo excited about them but it prob took me about a year to make myself watch them. (I hate endings!)

The movie with Baal was amazing. Calling on the cell phone? Priceless.

I really liked SGU, but I haven't seen a fair amount of the latter episodes because of a scheduling conflict. At some point, I plan to sit down and watch them all from the beginning again.

It made me pretty sad the way some of the Gateverse fans reacted to the show (especially all the vitriol well before even a single episode had aired), but *shrugs*

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 04:10 am (UTC)(link)
Why wouldn't we be upset, when they canceled a favorite show to put this dren on the air?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 07:09 am (UTC)(link)
Seconding the other anon. Why the hell shouldn't we be upset when a fun show with good rating got pulled down because the TPTB wanted to experiment and made it completely clear it's for this reason? They alienated their own fanbase well before the start of the series.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 05:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, there was the leak of the stone!sex storyline, where the team that gave us Lucius Lavin got rape wrong one more time, and the producers told us that if we weren't post-pubescent boys we were demographically undesirable to advertisers and could fuck off. That, after a season of Everyone Loves Jennifer and an entirely voluntary cancellation of Atlantis when MGM and Syfy wanted to keep it.

I don't know how any producers who weren't publicity whores felt, but Wright and Mallozzi were very straightforward about wanting fans of the first two series gone. That kind of thing makes people cranky.

OOooh, this show. I loved it *so much*. It had its problems, but man, it was awesome. Also - Robert Carlyle.

I watched the last ep and it was awesome, though sad. I will say - it ends in such a way that they could pick the series up again, or even do a mini or a movie easily.
*hopes and hopes*

I liked SGU more than I liked SGA in the end (SG1 is still my fave). It certainly had a lot of potential. I wish they had continued with it. Hopefully they will do a movie or something later to tie all 3 together and finish them off properly.

I've heard people say SGU was the worst of all the Stargates, but it's the only one I was able to watch without getting bored and giving up a few episodes in (I watched two disks of SG-1 once when I was sick, long before I ever heard of SGU, and I thought it was cheesy and boring). I guess it's all just a matter of taste - I love the grittiness factor as well.
