Ships you like because you KNOW it's fucked up

(Anonymous) 2012-10-07 10:32 pm (UTC)(link)
When people explain why they don't ship something (without bringing their OTP into the equation), they generally say something along the lines of, "Those two wouldn't be good together/they have an unhealthy relationship/there's a power imbalance."

So, my question is what ships do you like for any of these reasons listed? Are there any ships you like because they're deliciously fucked up and can't end well for one or both of the characters?

I'm not really in the Harry Potter fandom, but do fic writers tend to take the 'Snape is attracted to Harry because he reminds him of his mother angle'? 'Cause that would be creepy. XD

Anybody/Loki (Avengers) or Anybody/Lunatic (Tiger & Bunny). They can't and shouldn't end well without 400,000 words of recovery/remorse/reformation, and I don't want that anyway. Sadly, these pairings are also victims of Pretty Villain Syndrome (PVS), which means I almost never find fic with the component of fucked up I want. It's always happy-marriage-and-love-and-forgiveness-by-all, and screw that. :/

Kefka/Terra.

I'm a terrible person.

I actually think this one could end well, but only once they worked through the fucked-up-ness: Faith/Giles. I ship them *so hard* due to the season 8 comics arc with the two of them off being the wetworks for the Slayers. But it only works for me *because* they're both fucked up and broken. And there's the whole power imbalance on both sides, plus the whole Buffy issues they'd both have. (And I'm still holding out hope that Angel's plan in the Angel and Faith comics actually works. Because of the spoilers from season 8.)

Clark Kent/Lex Luthor, any continuity, but especially when set in the past in continuities where they were friends first. The ENTIRE draw of the pairing is the fact that they're absolutely, 100% for sure going to be mortal enemies one way or another.

Picard/Q. Just...Picard/Q. The power differential and rage-inducing blithe overrunning of boundaries and wishes is terrifying to a delicious degree.

James Kirk/Gary Mitchell. Sweet mother of god how I worship it.

In fact, I generally love hero/villain pairings where they used to be friends or acquaintances before they became enemies. If they didn't know each other beforehand it generally doesn't work unless they're personal archenemies, but loooove the exploitative nature of guilt/regret-ridden pairings. Xavier/Magneto, Dr Doom/Reed Richards, Tony Stark/Madam Masque, Spike/Angel, Batman/Harvey Dent....not Thor/Loki because I have an incest squick, but I love the gen equivalent.

Cartman/Kyle from South Park is one of the few extreme hatesex pairings I actually like, since they're "friends" and are expected to associate all the time in canon.

Kim Possible/Shego is never written with the dripping hatred and viciousness I want it to be written with, but it's awesome nonetheless.

The power dynamics of Nick Fury/Tony Stark are pretty much intractably exploitative on all levels, which is exactly what I like about it.

Miss Piggy and Kermit is technically all kinds of abusive, but the fact that Kermit genuinely gives no fucks about the fact is enough to make me not care.

I love Loki/Natasha and Loki/Tony only if it's noncon, regardless of which side is doing the noncon-ing.

Harry/Fred/George. I don't even want to explain my weakness for this.

I know there's more I can't think of right now...

Oh. I generally get pissed off whenever someone insults a pairing (usually between a really screwed-up crazy guy and a less-developed normal love interest girl) with "she deserves someone normal!" Uh, is it too much to hope that maybe she doesn't want normal? Because that would make her character so much more interesting and also wouldn't be massively condescending? (read: soooooo many canon superhero romances) It's different if he actually treats her badly, but other than that...yeah, I generally sideeye that rationale.

just a few that come to mind...

Harley Quinn and the Joker (as well as Batman/Joker because it's pure crack and nightmare fuel)
Mayo and Angel from Strain
Merlin and Morgana

Oh fuck, yes, I totally forgot about Harley/Joker. LOVE IT. Don't care about any deep complex emotions and characterization, just love the sheer unbelievably fucked-up adorable insanity of it.

Sansa (shut up)

Cronus/Mituna

Buffy/Spike (every time I see fluff written about them, I die a little bit)

Voldemort/Peter (I DON'T EVEN KNOW)

Peter/Stiles

Iceman/Loki

Subaru and Seishirou. We saw how it turned out and it wasn't pretty to say the least. Doesn't stop them from being one of my m/m OTPs.

I only sort of ship this, but Phoenix/Trucy.

Pretty much every OTP I have is fucked up, but I generally only like stories where they fix whatever is fucked up between them and wind up together happily ever after. Like, they fix the power imbalance, or end the enemy threat, or come to terms with their differences or whatever.

Snarry, Sebastian/Ciel, Anders/Fenris, Thor/Loki, SanSan, Vilkas/Farkas, Sephiroth/Cloud, Wikus/Christopher, Dean/Castiel, Hope/Lightning, Shinji/Kaworu, Kain/Raziel, Jesus/Judas, Fayt/Albel, Balthier/Vaan, Ender/Peter/Valentine, Ted/Barney, and I'm sure there's lots more that aren't coming to me right now.

Clive/Dimitri, which is also super-rare. Hell, the only fic I've seen with the pairing involved Dimitri teaching Clive how to use a straight razor. While both of them were in prison.

Not that I can see Dimitri wanting anything to do with Clive post-canon anyway. I really want pre-canon fic with Clive manipulating the fuck out of Dimitri, but no one ever writes it.

Not quite what you're looking for, but Doctor/Anyone Other Than Romana. For almost anyone, the Doctor is so much older/more powerful and will see them age and die, while for them he lives forever but changes faces and is almost someone else. Doctor/Captain Jack is fucked up for other reasons, starting with Jack's unhealthy obsession, but at least it doesn't have the age issues at this point. (Eventually it'll have them in the other direction. So does Doctor/Rory, but almost no one ships that without Amy and/or River also involved.)

Megatron/Optimus
And I'm not talking about portrayals of them that border on being healthy relationships. I can only read when they're 100% royally fucked up, and it often freaks me out, but I can't pull away.
In the Prime 'verse, I ship Starscream/Arcee so hard, and that's pretty messed up, too. Oddly enough, Transformers is the only fandom do this with. My other fandom pairings are kinda bland in their normality.

I love fucked up ships. I don't care if someone decides they're bad for each other, sometimes I want to read a ship that is bad for each other.

I have no excuse.

Aizen/Orihime. I don't want Aizen to be given some hope that he can be redeemed. I want him to be the ruthless, manipulative, creepy psychopath that he is while coaxing Orihime into sexual acts. I like this ship fucked up. It hits all my kinks and I don't want Aizen woobified when he's a bastard.

Chris/Wesker from Resident Evil. Whether it's involving them having a tumultuous relationship before the Mansion Incident, lots of unresolved messed up UST, or just Wesker with a huge, unrequited lust for Chris that eats at him and his sanity. I don't care. I just want it messed up and dramatic and full of angst.
pantswarrior: Sydney stands menacingly over Hardin. (sydxjohn)

Re: Ships you like because you KNOW it's fucked up

[personal profile] pantswarrior 2012-10-08 01:44 pm (UTC)(link)
That sums up my OTP: Sydney/Hardin from Vagrant Story. Huge power imbalance there, Hardin flinches when Sydney approaches him angry, and at one point Sydney actually uses a sort of mind-control power on Hardin to make him stop arguing.

But I ship them in part because after Sydney stops using that mind-control power, despite Sydney's incredible power and immortality and general dominance in everything, Hardin has the balls to get up and tell him "NEVER do that again." And Sydney says nothing in his own defense, just walks away.

I was pretty much sold on the pairing right then. So messed up, those two. So unhealthy. But the rest of their interactions show that there's mutual respect, and Hardin's clearly not following Sydney because he's immortal or because he thinks Sydney's infallible, but because Sydney is Sydney.

Over in Ace Attorney fandom, I sort of fell in love with the idea of Kristoph/Phoenix during the years between AA3 and AA4 just because both of them are just biding their time, spying on the other, waiting to make their move. Kristoph is pretending to be Phoenix's friend just in case he figures out who screwed him over and starts making trouble, so he can dispose of him, and Phoenix already knows, but is pretending to be clueless and gathering info so he can avenge himself. Incredibly precarious balance there, mutual hate masquerading as friendship even in canon. Adding the extra dimension of a relationship into that? HNNNNG.
