yeah...considering what this show is and what this pairing is based on I am not suprised at all. I mean c'mon, what more can you expect from a fandom who watches a show called "Teen Wolf". (They're probs not in it for the deep discourse, is what I'm saying.)

You know, I think I've seen more "deep discourse" for TW (and over tumblr, mind you) than I've seen for many 'serious' shows. Yes, people conclude by adding tags about their FEELS~ but it's all there if you look for it.

sequel to teen wolf: wolf teen. awkward teenage wolf goes through the trials and tribulations of wolf high school. will he get picked last for the hunting team?? will he work up the courage to invite whitepaw to the wolf prom??

Can someone explain to me why Stiles would actually like Derek? Or does it come down to the basic "THEY OPENLY SHOW DISTASTE FOR ONE ANOTHER, SO THAT MEANS THEY LOVE EACHOTHER" shipping logic?

you must only be reading shitty fics, because for the most part, to the point where it's feeling like it's in every single fic i read, there's some mention of how Stiles isn't ~blind~ he knows Derek's hot but because he's such a dick/grump/creep/~*sourwolf Stiles doesn't acknowledge anything to himself about it until after they grudgingly fall madly in snarky love due to circumstances/tropes/magical bonding etc...

in a lot of the ones i've read (and liked) that's how it starts out, and is generally developed on from there. i mean, they're the two in the main group that have lost family members, so there'd be some degree of empathy for each other. plus, lbr, derek's not gotten much character development and we don't really know what sort of person he was like before The Fire and what he does when he isn't creeping or in dangerous situations. writers get free reign to come up with stuff that stiles and he could have in common. my favourite is closet nerd!derek.

What the hell kind of fic are you reading? In everything I read, it's A reason (obviously - kind of goes with the territory), but it's rarely the only or most important reason.

According to those who have watched the show there is little else in canon to cause him to like Derek as they have very little screen time together.

This is really not the case. Stiles and Derek don't share as much screentime as other pairs of characters, but in the times that they're together, they do things like save each other's lives and work together to defeat outside threats. Which isn't to say that all of their interactions are positive; Derek also does things like physically intimidate Stiles, threaten the lives of a couple of Stiles's classmates, etc. Depending on viewer interpretation, equally strong arguments could be made for Stiles liking Derek, disliking Derek, or being wary of Derek to the point where he's unsure whether he likes or dislikes him. The one thing you can't say, though, is that they've interacted so little as to be indifferent to each other.

They're not exactly two people with a ton of things in common (that aren't Scott) and interaction based on mutual respect and fondness. I mean, I imagine it's mostly on the writer to magic up some ways they would realistically get together, and animal attraction is the shortest path to special naked time.

In practically all of the "Sterek" fic I've read, it usually boils down to the whole "Mating Instinct" / "You're my Mate" situation.

That's how attraction works, though.

The person I like now? Is adorable, has quirky interests (much like me so I approve) and highly intelligent and good at conversing. The reason I began crushing on them, though? They're hot.

I'm not really a Sterek shipper and only read Sterek fics because the pairing makes up 90% of all fanwork and I find lots of stuff in Sterek fics really ... odd.

But! Personally, I think Stiles sees the Good Man™ hidden in Derek. He saves him at the pool because he knows Derek isn't really the Big Bad Wolf, and the little conversation they have when they're both paralyzed, the looks they share during that scene, it just screams "I trust you" and "I see you as an equal*" to me. And I don't get that impression from a lot of interactions between Derek and another character. So if I were writing a Sterek fic, I'd use those things as a starting point for Stiles' crush on Derek.

* not so much in the physical power department, of course

I've seen the stories you're talking about, but I've also read fic in which the author seems to make a point of having Stiles list all of the things he likes about Derek other than his looks. I have one open right now, actually: A Work in Progress by entanglednow. Find the section that begins "Shit, you know how pissed I am at you right now, for thinking that about me?" to see Stiles declaim Derek's awesomeness for two full paragraphs. And I know I've read similar passages in other stories, though I can't place any of them right now.
