Christmas Parties

(Anonymous) 2012-10-10 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
So I'm kind of stuck organizing the office Christmas Party, and I have no idea what to do. They only just gave me a budget today, and now I only have a month, and it's going to be a miracle if I can book something, but w/e.

My ACTUAL question: Has anyone ever been to a REALLY GOOD office Christmas Party? Where you did something fun? We usually have a cocktail hour followed by a sit-down dinner, but this year people say they want something more interesting.

My office is pretty small, so we don't even do the whole big thing for Christmas. We usually get a catered lunch and just eat in the conference room and the bosses make a speech.

One suggestion might be to ask your office for their favorite Christmas songs (or just gather a bunch of Christmas songs) and have music playing in the background of where ever you eat.

For something different, would your office be up for doing buffet style at Asian/Indian restaurants? That might be a little more interesting.

Good luck!

My internship last year had a nice Christmas party that was basically just an open bar and dinner at a very high-class restaurant. Er, not really a restaurant; it was the Harvard Club. We were up on the thirteenth floor or so, with a live piano and floor-to-ceiling windows so we got a great view of the city. I think a cocktail hour and sit-down dinner could work if you found a really great place for it, but with time so limited, you might be out of luck.

One thing I do not recommend is what that office had for a party the year before - dinner and drinks on a boat. People said it was awful, since no one could leave until the boat docked and they were stuck there far later than they wanted to be. Keep in mind, when planning something, let people have escape routes.

I don't know what your office atmosphere it like, but keeping it low-key might be a good idea, too, since a lot of people get stressed out near the holidays.

Have you asked people around your office for suggestions?

I went to an office Christmas party with my mom once where they had a whole...dinner party mystery event thing. I'd imagine that'd be more expensive than your budget allows, though.

But depending on the size of your office, you could maybe do something like that? Get one of those murder mysteries in-a-box and go with it. Or, to make it more simple you could have everyone bring their favorite board games and have a gigantic board game night? That would mean you wouldn't have to plan much, outside of maybe getting a few extra board games, but people should have an activity they can enjoy and use to get to know their coworkers better.

(not OP)

The board game night sounds kind of cool. You could even combine that with a cocktail-hour/meal. Book a nice lounge or room somewhere where there are tables of some kind, bring a bunch of games, and have a bar and buffet available.

My workplace has their Christmas parties (all the main departments have one, and all the departments attend everyone else's parties; it's two weeks of parties all the time) during working hours, so getting and watching everyone else get drunk on the clock is a pretty big highlight. LOL My favorite year though was probably when a high school choir was brought in to sing Christmas carols.

What kinds of activities are available in your general area? If they want something interesting and Christmasy, well, give them an activity. Ice skating, caroling, sleigh rides, hitting up the local women's shelter or hospital's children's ward with bags full of donations/gifts for kiddies, etc.

My work once did an 'awards night', which we planned for months beforehand. It worked really well, we had a sit-down meal, then drinks, and everyone at work voted for the awards in the months leading up to the event. (some were good, such as 'best male/best female' and some were joking like 'most likely to be drunk')
We also had a 'dress to impress' dress code.
