Oh, I understand how you feel. I've been in too many fandoms, large and small, with shippers getting upset over anything and everything from their couple not getting married (despite there being no lead up to a wedding of any sort) to not seeing their couple kiss onscreen for a season. (The couple I'm vaguely describing in the latter part has kissed before, are together at the moment, and have all the sex in the world. And yet.)

Seriously, shippers (the more extreme ones, anyway), keep your crazy within the fandom and stop hurling it on the people that work on a show. Not everyone that works on and watches a show ships characters like you do, ffs.

It is obnoxious to thrust your shipping in the creator's face, but it would be a very petty writer who changed canon as a punishment to fans.

This is how I feel. I've never understood why some people feel the need to link TPTB fic, or tell them the canon relationships suck and they should go in another direction. It's their 'baby', and they're going to do what they want whether the audience likes it or not. I mean, of course there are people who consider fan reactions and sometimes change things accordingly, but that simply isn't going to fly with everyone no matter how much you push. It seems like a fruitless effort to me.

But I still agree with anon that it WOULD be petty for them to change canon for that specific reason.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-11 11:36 pm (UTC)(link)
No, they'll just demand that the fanfic stop for their creation. Like a couple of other's on FF.N

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 06:48 am (UTC)(link)
If the fan-pairing canonically have no feelings for each other to begin with, putting something in cannon to make it clear they have no feelings for each other wouldn't really be changing canon. Neither would being more careful to avoid writing things that could be interpreted as romantic. It was always canon that they weren't together and weren't going to be.

You can still say that's petty, okay, but saying the author would be "changing canon to punish fans" is over-dramatic and an exaggeration. It's more like the author would be making a point to avoid ambiguity on a subject they'd already decided on.

Which I really don't think is all that petty. If they were considering making the ship canon and changed their mind because of annoying fans, then that could be pretty petty, but that's not the case OP described.

God I hate it when fans do that so much, I get being happy about a ship and wanting to share the love but do that with other fans not the creators/actors.

Yeah, shipping fine but taking it to the actual actors/actresses and creator is just rude. Do fans who do that even realize that their fav couple isn't canon or is it one of those "they're obviously meant to be together, I've made several fan theory essays about it!" type things?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
This kind of behavior has made me hate ships I used to love. I hate it because I feel like it's not natural, like the author is just putting it there because s/he was pressured into doing so and is like "there! are you happy now?".

Oh gosh, I haaaate it when fans go shove ship-work in a creator/actors face. It gets so creepy and weird (remember what all the LotR actors had to put up with?).

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 05:27 am (UTC)(link)
Totally agree that it's creepy and weird to shove ships into creator's faces. It's kind of like asking them to ship their children.

What happens in the bedroom should stay in the bedroom, especially if that bedroom is a mental one.

The worst (to me) is when fans show actors their photo manips of the actor's characters--or, well, their faces--pasted over naked pictures. Or really just super-shippy fanart that looks like the actors. But especially the photoshopped porn. I mean, in what world do you grow up in where you think it's okay to show a stranger naughty pictures you made of them?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 12:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh god, I'm so glad I've never heard of this until just now.

Oh God, now you made me remember than Sam/Dean Photoshop-porn site/lj/whatever I once saw...the unsightly horror persists in my mind even now and I'm not even in the fandom

HIDDLESTON FANS DO THIS

oh god i'm not even a fan but seeing the tumblr screencaps is soooo painfully embarassing

(Anonymous) 2012-10-12 12:57 pm (UTC)(link)
I had to tumblr save everything and sometimes it still gets through. Ugh.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 03:56 am (UTC)(link)
Fucking agreed, OP.

Fans who try to tell the creators to make their fanfic canon in general just...

It does NOT work like that. You want to write for television? Learn how to write script format (not chat, script. difference.) and work for it like everybody else.

what about real life ships?
people insisting that the actual actors have to fuck each other and they hate on the actual girlfriends/boyfriends?
I feel so embarrassed for them because I picture the actors reading that shit on the internet thinking that the whole fandom is that crazy.
