Speaking as a huge Marvel comics fan who was reading the comics before I ever got into the movies? I think not reading the comics is a very good choice and I don't think you should ever feel bad about it. Anyone who says you can't be a movie fan without reading the comics is a complete idiot. In fact, unless you're really interested in the comics and want to actually get into them, I would recommend you don't check them out.

Personally, I completely disconnect the comic and movieverses and see them as parallel universes like the mirror universe from Star Trek, so nothing the comics characters do influences my view of the movieverse characters. But even without the movieverse to contrast with...the comics are still so disappointing.

Mind you, I say disappointing, not bad. They just make me sad and frustrated. See, I absolutely adore the shit out of the movieverse and I can absolutely say that I enjoy it a hundred times more than the comicsverse (and it's, uh, way better-written in general, although comparing mediums is iffy), but the comics will always be my favorite and I'll always love it more than the movieverse, because there are aspects of the comicsverse that are just so wonderful that the movies will never be able to touch, and that's what frustrates me -- that something with so much amazing stuff in it has so much crap in it too.

So while I personally lovelovelove the comics because I can't really help loving them, I wouldn't recommend them to movieverse fans, tbqh. They're generally just a painful experience.

(lol melodramatic tl;dr, but I hope you get my drift)

I agree. The movie!verses have this sweet quality to them that the comics don't have. Professor X, for one, is a complete dick, which Patrick Stewart couldn't pull off.

Honestly, the only X-men comics I genuinely liked were the New Mutants, anything with 80's Storm, and anything with the original Kitty Pryde (and Lockheed! What the hell happened to Lockheed?) and/or Colossus before one became an airhead and the other a drug addict. The problem is that the comics have to keep publishing new storylines and oftentimes that ruins the characters.

That's how it's supposed to be though, as far as I know.

It's the same thing as the 616 and Ultimate and MC2... they don't have anything to do with each other on any level aside from having people who are vaguely similar (in some cases) and have the same names. I mean, obviously if you've been reading the comics (let's say 616 for ease here) for the last 20 years, you've got some preconceived notions about characters you love in the form you're familiar with but that doesn't mean the MCU verse version of that character is going to be the bane of your existence.

You might worry a little more before hand (oh God, how I worried about Hawkeye... would he be completely the Ultimate version? Was I going to lose the character I loved forever in a wash of movie-verse fanfic? AAAAAAH!). You might notice the easter egg treats throughout. But I would think most people who have some sci-fi under their belt get the concept of alternate timelines/universes and that the events from one verse won't or don't feed directly into the other. Sure, they'll take for the classic stories (or not so classic) but you'll get distilled down, concentrated versions which, in my opinion can be far more satisfying.

I'm sorry... I'm babbling. It's late.

tl;dr Different universes aren't unique to superheroes and are handy for stuff like this.

I actually got gleeful at several of the ways the movieverse blatantly defied or changed things from the comics, providing they were good changes, and I'm personally utterly baffled at other comic fans who go "omg you wouldn't like X if you knew how it was in the comics!" because, um, guys? Why the hell would I want a movie that's exactly like the comics? I could just read the comics, where the medium is much more suited to some stories rather than others, and usually the changes serve to make the characters either more likable, less dated, or less confusing.

I think the bulk of the wank about this was surrounding the characterization and interpretation of Captain America, and how oh noes he's not like the comics character.
