Re: Why is it bad to eat junk food?
(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)Some things, like heavy binging on sugar and fat, will make you feel crappy within a few hours, typically, although if you do it all the time you won't have a less-crappy feeling to compare it to. Other things will lead you to gradually feel crappy after weeks if you keep it up for that long.
When you're young, your metabolism is faster and you can eat more crappily without gaining weight, typically. This will not generally last. Some people naturally run thin, too, but a high-calorie diet will still lead to higher body fat (in your abdominal cavity), and a high-sugar diet will still do things to your blood sugar. You also probably don't know whether you're someone who carries the genetic tendency to get dangerously high blood pressure from eating too much salt (I happen to know that I don't).
If you're a young woman, the nutrients you're likely to neglect would include iron, certain vitamins (including A and D), and calcium. If you're full from eating those cookies, and so don't eat enough food with these neglected nutrients, that's eventually going to be a problem. Anaemia (lack of iron) is very common, and not fun, and you have to keep it up long term (there's no quick diet fix). Calcium and vitamins A and D are important for bone density, and you're heading for the densest bones you will ever have in your life: if you don't look after them now, you'll only be managing the damage as you age, and you will be cross with your younger self when you have brittle bones!
The "breaking out" thing is just an urban legend.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)There are certain very specific spots in specific areas that seem to be linked with certain deficiencies and so on, but that won't lead to periodic breaking out in the same way.
