Why is it bad to eat junk food?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-13 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
I've been told not to eat junk food because it makes you fat and your face breaks out, but this has never happened to me. I eat a lot of salad too, so why is it bad if I eat five cookies in one day?

Because people want you to feel bad about yourself and be unhappy. If your metabolism can take it and you're still getting all the proper nutrition, go ahead and eat that many cookies.

This. When I was at my healthiest, I was pretty much having Little Debbie snack cakes and cappucino for breakfast every day (I worked 3rd shift at a gas station, and only got up like half an hour before my shifts). Meanwhile I was gaining weight entirely in muscle - my pants from middle school still fit me, but my shoulders looked awesome in a tank top.

Then I started thinking maybe I should start eating healthier, started bringing oatmeal and drinking juice and such, and got horribly sick. :P

Basically this.

As long as you're healthy eat whatever the hell you want.

This has never happened to me either. Well, I'm pretty sure I notice the couple of pounds that appear at the end of the week, but also go away by the end of the next. Maybe they would actually stay or keep piling on if I ate all the cookies every day.

But I digress!

Fuck this conspiracy to make us eat less grease and sugay. Let's eat cookies. I'm bringing some ice cream so we can smash it between two cookies (twookies?).

There's not really any such thing as junk food, but there is such a thing as a bad diet. A bad diet will give you too much of some nutrients that are too easy to get, and not enough of nutrients that are harder to get.

Some things, like heavy binging on sugar and fat, will make you feel crappy within a few hours, typically, although if you do it all the time you won't have a less-crappy feeling to compare it to. Other things will lead you to gradually feel crappy after weeks if you keep it up for that long.

When you're young, your metabolism is faster and you can eat more crappily without gaining weight, typically. This will not generally last. Some people naturally run thin, too, but a high-calorie diet will still lead to higher body fat (in your abdominal cavity), and a high-sugar diet will still do things to your blood sugar. You also probably don't know whether you're someone who carries the genetic tendency to get dangerously high blood pressure from eating too much salt (I happen to know that I don't).

If you're a young woman, the nutrients you're likely to neglect would include iron, certain vitamins (including A and D), and calcium. If you're full from eating those cookies, and so don't eat enough food with these neglected nutrients, that's eventually going to be a problem. Anaemia (lack of iron) is very common, and not fun, and you have to keep it up long term (there's no quick diet fix). Calcium and vitamins A and D are important for bone density, and you're heading for the densest bones you will ever have in your life: if you don't look after them now, you'll only be managing the damage as you age, and you will be cross with your younger self when you have brittle bones!

The "breaking out" thing is just an urban legend.

I have to admit I'm kind of worried about the calcium thing. I eat a lot of different things, but I don't really like milk or yogurt. I should probably start taking tablets. :/

They also make delicious calcium gummies (along with a lot of other tasty gummy vitamins) now, if taking tablets doesn't appeal to you.

Eh, you can find tables online showing which other food contain calcium, so you can work them into your diet instead. Dairy products are just the easiest, so you don't really have to think about it if you're eating a yoghurt and having a bit of milk every day. Sardines and whitebait are also decent sources, because you eat the bones! There's others. Have a look at some lists before you break out tablets.

There's plenty of alternatives to dairy for calcium. I'm lactose intolerant actually, so I'm supposed to avoid the stuff anyways. I don't have my list on hand atm, but it includes things like dark green leafy vegetables and fish (like sardines where the bones are very very edible), not to mention fortified soy/almond/rice/etc. milks.

I don't think the "breaking out" thing is an urban legend, just not an across the board result. I definitely start breaking out and having skin issues if my diet is full of cookies and candies and crappy greasy foods.

The strongest correlation seems to be that women "break out" at certain points in their menstrual cycle, and also crave so-called "junk" at certain points in their menstrual cycle. If you don't know the third factor, it looks like causation.

There are certain very specific spots in specific areas that seem to be linked with certain deficiencies and so on, but that won't lead to periodic breaking out in the same way.

It's not really the junk food itself that's terrible, it's how much of it you eat. Five cookies a day along with a relatively balanced diet? Sure, whatever. Eating nothing but fast food, big gulps and twinkies every single day? No, you have a problem. Whether you're fat or thin, that's an awful diet.

junk food isn't bad, but it really just depends on the person. i eat meals in the gaming lab sometimes with all the other nerdatrons and they always get like an entire box of zebra cakes and doritos for dinner but are totally skinny. that being said though, that doesn't mean they're healthy; people who look thin on the outside aren't inherently healthy! clogged arteries can happen to people regardless of their metabolisms, for instance.

it's good that you're eating salad (hopefully not saturated with cheese or unhealthy dressings - i thought the salads i was eating were a better option than getting, say, french fries, but a lot of dressings are way worse calorie-wise). however, healthy foods don't "cancel out" unhealthy ones. if you eat a bunch of donuts or something and then eat some salad, your body is still using the donuts for nutrients and energy, and now it has to go through a salad too. but salads can be nutritious depending on what's in them, so if you're eating junk food without good nutritional value (vitamins and minerals and such), then salads and other healthier foods do help with that.

with all that said!! it's important to note that you can eat whatever you want, as long as you use those nutrients and burn off excess throughout the day. it's 100% okay to eat five cookies. if you work those calories and such off, then you're still maintaining your body's health - both inside and out.

this month i'm eating better than i generally do. it'll eventually be my lifestyle, but my original plan was to crash diet every few days until halloween to get in better shape for my costume. granted that's super unhealthy, so i opted out of crash dieting. instead i'm eating like 1300 calories a day, but i'm also not doing any extra exercise. i gain a bunch of weight every semester i'm at university, it's ridiculous. this never happens at home and i eat whatever i want when i'm at home! this summer i ate an entire pizza myself and didn't gain shit.

i'm pretty sure my main issue here at uni is that what i was eating in the past went way over 2,000 calories per day and wasn't working those off. when i'm at home i can go days without eating, but i'm hungry like every second here at uni. maybe because i'm more active here? idk. i'm going way off topic.

"so i opted out of crash dieting. instead i'm eating like 1300 calories a day"

Unless you're like 4 feet tall, that's still crash dieting, and super unhealthy.

it's not inherently unhealthy, it depends entirely on your lifestyle. anything below around 1100-1200 calories is where it starts getting unhealthy because you're not getting enough calories for muscle growth, even if you aren't doing exercise regularly. i'm making sure i get the nutrients i need.

that being said though, i do know it's not the healthiest option. it's a temporary change for a couple of weeks before i establish a better routine i can maintain for the longterm.
