the very few BDSM fics i have read really excited and opened my mind, but then i considered that i can't know the validity of what these people are writing - as in, to what extent their stories are 'realistic'*, so i had to step away from it all because i didn't want to be filled with misinformation on something that was starting to make sense to me (does that even make sense?)

*the last BDSM fic i read scared the fuck out of me. it was nothing but sexual, mental and physical abuse (with kidnapping just for kicks!) that was trying to come across as 'romance'. quite frankly, it disgusted me

If there's abuse it's not BDSM. BDSM watchwords are safe, sane, and consensual. If people mislabel abuse as BDSM (which people do a lot), that sucks and they need to stop.

Some BDSM fics are very unrealistic compared to what BDSM is in real life. But I don't think that makes all of them invalid, necessarily. For a lot of people, BDSM can be a way of consensually exploring fantasies. Like, I say I have a punishment kink, but that doesn't mean I want to be "really" punished against my will. I like the idea of playing it out with a partner. But a lot of fics approach BDSM more from a fantasy perspective.

It can be annoying/creepy when people write things like abuse and portray it in a romantic way. But on the other hand, I can see how someone might enjoy the fantasy of being kidnapped and abused without thinking that that's okay in real life. If they translate that kink into their real life relationships, it will ideally involve a lot of trust and consent, and will probably be milder and safer.
