How are they hating women? Is it because they don't want the men to have love interests? I think Uhura has the ability to be an awesome character all on her own.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
They wouldn't be whining if Kirk and Spock were love interests, so, yes, they are being misogynistic.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
+1

I'm a Kirk/Spock shipper but I accept that there is nothing I can do to change the fact that Spock/Uhura is what the studio wants everyone to ship.

I just wish Uhura could actually be three-dimensional character, rather that a Female Love Interest.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:19 pm (UTC)(link)
rather *THAN a Female Love Interest.

Apparently women aren't worth anything unless they're paired with someone.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:28 pm (UTC)(link)
No.

But the idea that a male character shouldn't be paired with a woman is worthy of side-eyeing.

"A male character"? We're talking about a specific male character here. No one is saying that a female character should never be paired with a male character. We're saying that:

a) Liking a female character isn't shown by shipping her

b) We don't like this particular pairing.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
The secret-maker says that they wouldn't like these characters paired with any female. You've just gone and characterized that as a "particular pairing."

Kirk/Any Female is a "particular pairing?" So, what...any woman with whom Kirk might be paired is interchangeable with the next?

just as apparently K/S aren't worth anything unless they're paired with each other
Apparently a friendship isn't worth anything unless the two characters want to fuck each other.

and so on...

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
They want the love interests of men to only be other men.

Marinate on that.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'd rather have a slash ship than a ship based on the Smurfette Principle.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The secret specifically says "I hope none of them get a legitimate female love interest." That means that, even if there were a love interest that wasn't based on the Smurfette Principle, OP would still be against it.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 01:40 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that, including one alien, I have counted at least 3 female officers beside Uhura on the bridge.
And last time I watched the smurfs I was an egg but I remember they had another girl beside her. Anyway, none of the smurfs stood a chance with either gal.

[personal profile] sarnath 2012-10-14 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
That's a pretty large assumption, isn't it? Maybe the OP ships only het in the rest of her fandoms?

(Anonymous) 2012-10-14 11:59 pm (UTC)(link)
I sincerely doubt it.

OK? But you don't have anything to base your assumptions on.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-10-15 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
No see, you are trying to hard. The one does not imply the other. They want the people in the way of their ship to be out fo the shipping picture. That does not necessarily translate to generic female hate, or even specific female (Uhara) hate.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Everything that these people are saying indicates that they have a problem with female characters. They twist their words in order to present a different picture, but their inconsistency is itself a clue to their actual feelings.
insanenoodlyguy: (Default)

Maybe they just like dude on dude?

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2012-10-15 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
Yes. Nobody else can accuracy read the thoughts and inner machinations of text that aren't actually said in that text but were REALLY MEANT, but you figured it out.

yeah, well, so do Kirk and Spock, fine characters all on their own. And yet when this shit comes up, it's always Uhura who would be just fine on her own and no mention of the mens. It's annoying. She can be awesome and have Spock in her bed every night. One does not take from the other.

insolentwitch: (Default)

[personal profile] insolentwitch 2012-10-15 01:44 am (UTC)(link)
I wasn't meaning to imply that Kirk and Spock aren't great without love interests. Because they are, they're all three awesome. But this was replying to a statement that the OP was hating women and we were discussing Uhura in particular. The original secret was hoping for Kirk/Spock, so talking about them being single didn't seem terribly relevant.

But now that you have brought it up, I don't think a character of any gender requires a love interest to be great. I also genuinely don't believe that having a love interest makes one less of a character. Both are great options. I just don't think that taking somebody out of a pairing is hatred for the character or their gender.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 02:36 am (UTC)(link)
DA

I just don't think that taking somebody out of a pairing is hatred for the character or their gender.

Agreed.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
I think it's a problem when someone declares that So-and-So should not ever be with someone of Specific Gender.

You have a problem with Spock being with Uhura? Okay, that's cool. You have a problem with Spock being with anyone who happens to have a vagina? Far less cool.

(Anonymous) 2012-10-17 12:11 pm (UTC)(link)
+1
the more I read these threads, the more I feel that some fans are just making excuses up. You ship K/S, of course you don't like S/U or any other pair with those characters. They can be the best ship of the planet and you'd still have a problem with it, and it's fine, everyone can understand we're all like that. But, please for the love of God, spare me the whole "faux feminism 101" crap.
I.don't.buy.it.
It's getting old.

yeah

(Anonymous) 2012-10-15 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
yeah, how people could get that idea from an secret that just stated that only the scenes with the male characters are worth watching and hope to not see those characters getting a FEMALE love interest (if it's male then it's ok :) ) in the sequel.

Those tiny mysteries you just can't figure out...
