The one thing that makes me think it was actually happening? When Evil Stepdad is chasing Ofelia through the maze, and the hedge parts to let her through and then reseals itself. Evil Stepdad comes barreling through and she's gone and the hedge is closed. What's the potential real-world analogue of that moment? She pole-vaulted over?

There was a gap in the hedge all along that was just big enough for a child to fit through, but not an adult man.

Oh, no, I'm not saying that the film ever showed a pre-existing gap in the hedge; just that if you wanted to give a real world explanation for how a hedge could "open" to let a child through, but not let a man follow her, then a child-sized gap in the hedge would be the most sensible explanation.

For me it was the chalk. How did she get out of her cellar room and past the armed guards with a kill order? Mercedes comes in with the rebels to rescue her and find only the chalk outline on the solid wall... yeah, that's my moment.

Me too. Everything else I can pass off as her imagination, but that always sticks to me. Still, I actually like being able to interpret it both ways, so... yeah.

Maybe the guards just couldn't bring themselves to gun down a small child? She could have drawn the outline and slipped out the door while the guards looked the other way.
