When Evil Stepdad is chasing Ofelia through the maze, and the hedge parts to let her through and then reseals itself. Evil Stepdad comes barreling through and she's gone and the hedge is closed. What's the potential real-world analogue of that moment?

There was a gap in the hedge all along that was just big enough for a child to fit through, but not an adult man.

Oh, no, I'm not saying that the film ever showed a pre-existing gap in the hedge; just that if you wanted to give a real world explanation for how a hedge could "open" to let a child through, but not let a man follow her, then a child-sized gap in the hedge would be the most sensible explanation.
