i considered it since i came up with a story idea i have yet to begin on, so it'd be perfect for nanowrimo, but nanowrimo itself goes against my own method of writing and i don't know if i'll enjoy the process. i guess i'll go for it anyway, it's not like i have to commit if i end up not liking the progression or something. the idea i had in mind is original, to answer your question. it's also seasonal! and i expect it to be one of my shorter works, but i think it'll easily pass 50k words if i expand on it (as i should). i'm working on a story that's almost at 10k words already and it's not even 10% done.

i know we're not supposed to, but i think i'd have a more enjoyable time working on a piece i've already started for nanowrimo. i've been so fixated on that story recently that i've set aside everything else i've been working on, and i'm afraid i'll do that when november rolls around too.

Out of curiosity, what's your usual method?

going at my own pace, jumping from story to story as my brain sees fit, etc. my biggest worry is that i'll lose inspiration and work on a different story for a time, which would put me behind in my goal to finish the nanowrimo novel. i know most people who participate encourage just writing and not focusing on perfect quality (or at least that's what i've been told in past years when i mulled over participating) but that wouldn't come easy for me. i don't mind being placed out of my comfort zone - i try to step outside of the box in different ways with every story - but messing with my writing process isn't something i've been too flexible with lol. :[

but there's no harm in trying i suppose, it's not like someone's gonna reject me for a job just because i didn't finish my nanowrimo novel once.

Ugh, I always lose interest in something if I don't get it done right away, and I feel like that's a big setback for me. Sometimes freewriting a ton helps me and sometimes I really need to go at a slower pace. I feel like I do need to change my writing process though, which is why I asked. I've never really participated either because I always get anxiety that keeps me from writing ANYTHING, but I think I've more-or-less jumped that particular hurdle, except for a few crappy days here and there.

i get discouraged pretty easily myself, especially if i've hit even a slight block. that's why so many of my stories are unfinished, i often takes months to get back to them. u__u

which probably says something about how effective my process is for me, lol?? as in, not very. so maybe trying different processes will end up being a good thing for me. i really don't like the idea of writing even when there's no motivation there, because i feel like mediocrity will come out of it, but i edit like crazy anyway, so if even crappy writing knocks me out of a block then that's better than just setting the story aside indefinitely.

eta: yeah i found it, in the welcome page it gives you tips and the second one says "Do not edit as you go." that would probably kill me, i can't not edit. i get the strategy behind it but i feel like editing time is always lmao.

I didn't write anything for a few years and only got back into it a few months ago, and I found that forcing myself to do it when there was no motivation actually helped make me motivated. I just started looking at it as something I had to do. I think I have two different 'modes' because sometimes I do the constant editing thing, and other times I find it easy to turn off (and yeah, the results of free-writing are usually crap, but sometimes there's something in there that is actually pretty good, and I guess the next step is to take that and build on it? I haven't actually succeeded with that step yet). But MAYBE this will work for you: instead of deleting/crossing out, just write the sentence, and then re-write it with the changes you want to make, as many times as you have to. It's like editing and free-writing AT THE SAME TIME.
