Anyone here have tale to tell about Wanks of Legend (either specific explosions like RaceFail '09 or long-running wanks like Kataang vs Zukara)? You may not get a "I survived The Wank of ______ and All I Got Was A Lousy T-Shirt" shirt, but I wanna knoooooooowwwww...

I was in RaceFail '09, if anyone wants to know. I was bright-eyed and earnest for the first half and popcorn-giffing for the second half.

It was quite some time ago, on LJ. The details are fuzzy but when I said I preferred to be buried with all my original parts, it exploded into a massive wank in which at least one person said I should kill myself because I was of no use to anyone.

How so? How are you defining morality? What makes this moral or immoral?

Do you believe in an objective morality? Why?

Also, no wai do I want my organs harvested when people think I'm brain dead but my body is kept alive, without anaesthetic.

LJ suspended accounts that had certain keywords in their interest section. It was supposed to be a cleanup of unsavory comms but legitimate support comms and discussion journals were suspended too. The wank was huge.

I was on the edges of the msscribe wank, particularly the last little flare-up a couple years ago.

I was acquainted with her on LJ prior to all the wank, but because I wasn't active in the Harry Potter fandom, the whole wank caught me completely by surprise. It didn't seem to add up with what little I thought I knew about her, so for a long time I didn't really believe it.

Then a few years ago I got to thinking about her, and wondered if she was still around. After a bit of googling and LJ sleuthing, I managed to find her LJ. I friended her, and after exchanging a few comments I was friended back.

Then just a couple of days later, there was a wank post about her that included her new LJ username. She promptly locked down that LJ, then deleted it.

I've always wondered -- was the timing purely a coincidence? Or did my finding her LJ somehow reveal it to the wanka who reported on it? (Not that I really think anyone bothers to "spy" on my LJ.) Or -- and this seems most likely -- did I only find her because she was trying to be found in hopes of triggering fresh notoriety?

I've never participated in wanks, partially from timidity and from acknowledged ignorance, but I've always been eager to read.

I remember the beginnings of Twilight and Hetalia wanks on F!S; there were so many threads and that's when I first noticed childings.livejournal.com (where has she been anyway? I haven't seen her around). I was such a Hetalia fan back then and was irritated by all of the arguments, although I understood and accepted why people felt the way they did. Now, I hardly give a shit about that fandom and I think she's actually pretty cool~

Last time I checked her LJ where she updates about RL stuff, she was on a date with some guy she was kind of wary about. She joked that he might be some kind of serial killer because even though he's attractive he gave off a creepy vibe. NGL, I'm a little worried and that feeling won't go away until she updates again.

Ehhh. There was a racefail wank that wasn't about A:tLA but rather some book that had a Black centaur or something in it. I wasn't a part of that directly, but there was a spinoff wank about Always Rape or Kill Off Yer Lesbians that metastatized from it among my friends.

At exactly the wrong time, because I was finishing a novel I was working on at the time, the big climactic ending of which involved, yep, one of the two women being threatened with rape (and her female partner saving the day and killing the creep -- but then getting in serious trouble for "murder" and so still having to deal with shitty consequences.) I'd planned the story to end that way from the beginning, so it felt REALLY WEIRD to read people talking all over the place about how that was a creepy trope and people who wrote "to it" were BAD BAD WRONG BAD NO WHY DO BAD THINGS ALWAYS HAPPEN TO THE LESBIANS OHGOD?!?!?? (Because they're the protagonists, and the story needed a plot?)

I remember sitting at my computer thinking "...you're gonna HATE Chapter 23, then. Do I get a pass if I'm a byke myself? FML."

I agree that OBVIOUSLY bad things are going to happen to the protagonist, otherwise what kind story would that be? (usually a boring one)

BUT I did read something recently about the portrayal of gay and lesbian characters in movies that relates to what you are saying. Something about how for a long time, gay chars were typecast as villains. After a while, TPTB realized that was a little....bad. So instead of gay=villain, they started including more gay characters that were just side parts. This intersected unfortunately with another plot device--especially prevalent in horror movies--of killing off every character except the protagonist (and occasionally the love interest), OR in specific sub-genres, raping non-protagonist women. Since gay and lesbian characters are STILL so very rarely the main character, this leads to an unpleasant result: gay characters, especially in horror movies, are basically always going to die. (at least, in American cinema. I don't see many non-Engish films, so I don't know how similar the situations are on that front.)

It's pretty much a step-by-step repeat of how the portrayal of African-Americans in film changed over time. (Once again, only drawing on my admittedly lacking knowledge of the AMERICAN film industry.)

This one is pretty much forgotten by now, but I remember Pokemon fandom exploded when the anime dubbing rights changed from 4kids to Pokemon USA and all the voice actors changed. I think the new voice actors got a bunch of hate mail and even death threats or something. One of the new VA's and one of the old VA's joined Serebii.net and the new one got a bunch of hate mail. And the fandom split into two factions, SOVA (Save Our Voice Actors) and SONVA (Save Our New Voice Actors). I was on SOVA's side and I wrote up plenty of frothing unduly angry rants that are just plain embarrassing to remember. I was later so embarrassed about the way I acted that I changed all my screen handles to disassociate myself from that, even though I wasn't well-known enough to get trolls stalking me or anything like that.

And then in the middle of it Kids WB! announced that they were cancelling Pokemon and there were all these email campaigns to Cartoon Network to take the series, and I wrote a song about being sad that Pokemon was cancelled and emailed it to them, and got an email back saying that they were going to start airing Pokemon from season 9 before it was ever officially announced. That was the proudest moment of my thirteen-year-old life and by then I was so glad that Pokemon wasn't getting cancelled that I didn't even care about the voice actors anymore.

I was part of a LOT of Doctor Who and Torchwood wanks from 2007-2010. Mostly as on who_anon, so you'll never know what parts were me/pimpmytardis. Lots of Rose vs Martha stuff, various Kate Orman wanks, Torchtanic, Sinkgate... Sinkgate might be my favorite because of how ludicrous it was.

I lurked through Lexicongate too. And the Amanda Palmer vs Disabled Feminists wank. Still hate her.
