Hmm I was central to the organ donation wank.

It was quite some time ago, on LJ. The details are fuzzy but when I said I preferred to be buried with all my original parts, it exploded into a massive wank in which at least one person said I should kill myself because I was of no use to anyone.

I remember that secret!! Was it the one where they judged you if you DIDN'T donate? Or am I mixing it up with the "donate blood" anon who got pissy at people for deciding not to donate if they didn't have legit medical problem? O_o

I think it was a little bit of both, tbh.

That is horrible... Organ donating is really great, but people need to respect another person's bodily autonomy dammit.

Corpses aren't people.

And ~bodily autonomy~ has shit to do with whether or not they're making a moral choice in donating or refusing to do so. There's obvious harm caused for no reason other then your feels. That's simply not defensible.

But were before they died, and whatever decision they made about their own body while living, for whatever reason, should be respected. I've opted to be organ donor myself, and I'd hate to think that after I died one of my relatives could decide to veto that, even without a medical reason for it.(And I do have relatives who would do that.)

No one should ever have the right to tell someone else what to do with their body in any situation. The only exception to that would be if the deceased never had the chance to actively make the decision themselves.

Then yes, you have every right to judge their decision, because it has obvious effects on those around them. Their is not right to not be free of judgement, and for people to call you out on the effect your choices will have.

I don't give a shit about being judged. I give a shit about someone trying to force another human being to live by their moral standards.

You know you remind me of the people who want to make my reproductive organs government property. You think you moral views trump everyone else's regardless of mental state, religious beliefs, or personal beliefs, and that is fucking bull shit.

I'd love it if everyone who was able opted to be an organ donor, but not everyone is going to. If someone decided not to I may think they're an ass depending on why, but if it ever comes up I will fight to the death to make sure they keep the ability to make that choice.

I mean I hold the beliefs I hold because I think they're right. If I didn't, I wouldn't hold them. Thanks for pointing out this trivially true fact.

And I'm sorry, but is the idea that we legislate morality really that complicated? I guarantee you do it yourself it'd be absurd not to. Hell I would imagine you do the same with bodily autonomy as well, unless you're fine with us not stopping the mentally ill from committing acts of self harm, or more simply - you don't let people do anything they want with their corpse in the first place. I mean if I put in my will that I want my body stuffed and put on the pavement, would you defend that because ~omg nothing gives you the right to violate bodily autonomy. Hell, there's even very specific criteria in dealing with a corpse and the destruction thereof, do you oppose that?

I haven't even suggested doing that yet anyway, just that you're a fucking asshole if you don't, and deserve to be called out on it.

I think you should seriously ask yourself why you would be so willing to defend their choice in this area. The downsides are tremendously obvious. People will die who could have been saved, alongside a host of quality of life medical operations, and scientific benefits gained. Weighed against this is the self evidently ridiculous idea that your corpse has any value outside the sentimental. In which case I suggest we make you go to every person who could have been saved, or their families, and tell them that they could have lived - but you held it as sacrosanct that a person who doesn't exist anymore found the idea of being cut up instead of buried to rot and be eaten by the worms, or burnt like industrial garbage to be gross.

Why would I defend that choice? Because I honestly believe it wouldn't stop there. There are people out there who think I regardless of the situation, or my feelings on it, if I end up pregnant I have to carry that pregnancy to term, and give birth to that baby no matter what it does to me. There patents on human genes, and there have been law suits over them, and the patents have been upheld by the feral government. There are too many ways someone could find to make a profit off forcing others to donate organs, it may be prevented now, but someone with enough money can make that vanish. When you make a profit off the organs of the dead it's in your best interest to make sure a majority of people have organs optimal for donating. Will that be because health care is optimized for everyone to get what they need to stay healthy? I seriously doubt it, because unless you can take choices away from people even the best health care isn't going stop them from doing something that might cut into your profits.

It may sound stupid to you, but that's the only way I can see something like that turning out especially here in the US where profit rules over everything else.

Holy hell. I've been reconsidering whether I want to donate my organs, actually, for various reasons, but afraid to tell people I've changed my mind for fear of people going "what the hell" at me. Now I'm scared.

But srsly, donate your fucking organs, to not do so is a clear moral failing.

How so? How are you defining morality? What makes this moral or immoral?

Do you believe in an objective morality? Why?

Also, no wai do I want my organs harvested when people think I'm brain dead but my body is kept alive, without anaesthetic.
